Why do all drag cars have such recessed rear wheels? Wouldn't it make more sense to just cut the fenders?

That car has been around for at least 6+ years .

It is actually in a a few episodes of pinks ....not participating on the show but you can see it in the background in the staging area .....they just never made the show races .
