The "great" city of Portland vs my truck...

    My truck got impounded today.
I failed to have the registration up to date so the cop impounded it. It's a 1971 F250 Camper special. It's a total beater. I use the truck about once every 3 months on average.

I'm not going to go on about the cop or that I was cheated blah blah blah. I can take the responsibility for what I failed to do.

But what pisses me the fuck off is the amount they charge to get the truck back.
Towing company (if I pick it up before 6pm)-$160.00
    Sheriffs office release fee-$75.00

I also received a $95.00 ticket and it will be void if I get the truck and get new tags. Interesting how that works eh. No matter what they will at least get $95.00. They have that system worked out pretty well I'd say.

So I pay $235.00 get the truck back or $95.00 for the ticket.
I need to get into the towing business.

Ya, it sucks big time. I had my first e30 towed 3 days after I bought it for the same reason, and the fees are crazy high. The City doesn't set the impound/towing fees though, the towing companies do. Sorry to hear about your shitty situation, good luck!!

I have been convinced since an early age, that tow truck drivers belong to a secret fraternity of assholes.

Secrety? That's a bit of a stretch. There have been cases where the towing company just took a completely legal car and then tried to charge for it. Actually, I think a case like that was posted here some time ago...

It sucks when you have to have a permit for legaly owned property doesn't it.

I blame myself (of course) for the tow but I feel victimized.
What's the actual point of impounding the vehicle?? I have insurance, I own the truck and I didn't even commit a moving violation. It's simple politics.
I don't even mind paying a fine. But to take my vehicle and have to fucking walk home is demoralizing.

My Acura got towed a few years ago from a bicycle store in Lake Oswego (of all places, how surprising). ASSHOLES had it towed even though it's winter and they barely ever get customers in there during the winter.

I had to take a cab downtown and ended up paying $225.00 total including cab fair to get my car out. I'm still pissed about that. They had the car for a whopping two hours.

Haha I don't think I've spoken bad about cops for no reason in 10 years. There just seems to be a point in life when you realize that if you are doing something illegal, and the cops get you, THEY are not the assholes...

To the OP, yes, it is a bit of a racket. But so is auto insurance, and no one seems to complain about that... hmmm

                            Total costs.......

If the cop doesn't want it thrown out= $416.00 (including registration

If the cop asks to throw it out=$319.00 (the judge can still uphold the citation)

The truck does not run well and is a rust bucket.
And considering older trucks are seriously cheap right now, I'm looking at buying a decent older truck for $1500.00.

I bitch about insurance all the time as well.

Maybe you should have left your sig outside to keep an eye on it. at least you'd have some video evidence.
