A Russian company called "Ural" reversed engineered a WW2 BMW bike and started building copies. They've been around for decades, and they've refined the bike over the years to its present condition.

The older ones still have drum brakes, and look very much like a vintage BMW.

The Chinese built a military version for a long time, too. Someone was fixing those up and importing them, but I don't know if they still are or not.

I know these aren't dime-a-dozen 80's bricks like e30's, but is there some type of forum or something similar where I can read up on these? I'm finding it difficult to get good, complete info.

The bikes are commonly called "Airheads". Search the term and you'll find all kinds of crap out there.

I saw this one at a military museum near Omaha Beach in Normandy a few years back.

I saw one of those parked in a garage in San Francisco. Saw the roundel, on what I thought to be an old harley or the like. Walked over and went, WTH. So sick. And it had the side car as well, fucking awesome.

After looking to them a bit, I really like them. I've been wanting a bike as of late just for driving around town and having for some fun drives. I was looking in to a modern sport bike, but I think something like a r51, r50 or r60 is more suitable for me. They're old, slow and parts are expensive, but they really have more character and are just better looking.

I'd like to find something like the one on craigslist that Joe posted above. It's relatively cheap, and in need of some work. I could do some simple maintenance until I get out of school and can afford to do a full restore.
