Mother bitch of a computer problem...

I recently got a spare notebook for free and I had hopes of wiping the hard drive down and being able to use it as a backup laptop for pron and whatnot. It's a Compaq Presario 2100US.

For the most part I have been able to install quite a few programs, but I am still unable to access the internet. I have AIM 6 on there and I can use that fine, but I have tried multiple times to download and run IE6, IE7, and IE8 and none of them work. The computer had a memory capacity of 27.9GB (very low compared to the 68.4GB that my primary notebook has,) is this the reason it can't run IE? It's very frustrating and I want to light the notebook on fire and toast marshmellows with it, does anyone have any ideas?

Ummm, hard drive capacity should not be your problem. I have the same capacity notebook and I do everything just fine...

By wipe it down did you do a complete reformat? Perhaps you need to use windows updates to run IE... I don't care about IE. I use mozilla firefox, it kicks ass and it's a browser you could easily use. Try downloading it.

I reinstalled XP SP2 and tried to install IE6, 7, and 8 and none of them work. I am using a Linksys WRT54G card, and it communicates fine with my home wireless setup (which is why I can access AIM fine,) but besides that it doesn't seem to be working.

Sometimes IE wont run if there is an existing Iexpore.exe process running in the background.

Run task manager (Ctrl + Shift + Escape) look for any iexplore.exe processes running in the background. Kill it, then try to launch IE again.

I've tried looking for iexplore.exe on there in the past and it never shows it running. What happens is, I click the internet icon on the desktop and the window opens up for a second, but then disappears. It's like it tries to open up, but it can't.

I'm in the process of downloading Firefox, so we'll see how that works.

                  Blow me, Bill Gates.

I'm not usually a fan of anything but IE, but I just downloaded Firefox and it works like a charm. Thanks for the help guys.

When in doubt, don't use the Microsoft version.

(I know this is going to cause a shitstorm...)

...but I'm about this far away from selling my Dell laptop and getting a Macbook.

I have heard good words about Mac products, and I am usually a diehard Microsoft guy. I'm using a dynamite Dell XPS M140 as my primary notebook, but I think the next one will be from the dark, fruity side.

I'm not a power user or anything, I don't run tons of windows-necessary applications. I mainly browse the web, listen to music, watch videos/movies, use photoshop, play one or two games, and that's about it.
