Horror on honeymoon island
Date: 06 August 2008
By Staff reporter
A Derry honeymooner has told how a Greek island paradise became "like something out of a nightmare" when a woman was decapitated during a horrific killing rampage.
'Journal' reporter, Michael McMonagle - who is on honeymoon in the popular getaway with his new bride, Roisin - was horrified to learn that a local man hacked off his girlfriend's head and paraded it through the streets.
"We were absolutely shocked by this grisly news", said the 'Journal' man.
"We are in the resort of Kamari, just a short distance from where this has happened; everyone we speak to here is talking about it and they are stunned.
"This place is paradise but this is like something out of a nightmare," he added.
The blood curdling orgy of violence began when 31 year-old Athanassios Arvanitis decapitated his partner's dog with a butcher's knife in the village of Vourvoulos, near Santorini's main town Thira, it emerged.
He allegedly killed 25-year-old Adamantia Karkali by stabbing her in the armpit. He then cut her head off and paraded it around the streets, earning him the chilling tag, 'The Butcher of Santorini'.
Arvanitis was shot five times by police as he tried to behead a police officer and was eventually arrested. He remains in intensive care. The authorities believe the deadly rampage was triggered by his sacking as a hotel chef.
Two doctors were seriously hurt when struck by a jeep driven by Arvanitis as he tried to escape while a Greek tourist was injured by a ricochet bullet.
People living in Santorini say they have not witnessed such savagery since Nazi executions during the World War II occupation.
However, the 'Journal' man and his bride, local schoolteacher Roisin are determined to enjoy their time on the scenic island.
"We have always felt perfectly safe and I don't think that will change because this was not an attack on tourists," Michael said.McCain's military draft: Are you willing to bet your life?

Last tenant 'found decapitated'
A man who was found with his head severed by a chainsaw was fighting to stay in a block of 70 flats in Hampshire cleared for redevelopment.
David Phyall, 50, was the last tenant at the Atlantic Housing Ltd housing association flats in Eastleigh.
His body was found by police on 5 July, who said his death was not suspicious. Post-mortem tests showed he died of a "complete transection of the neck".
An inquest was opened and adjourned at Winchester Coroner's Court on Friday.
A spokesman for the coroner said" As far as we know, no one else was involved."
"There's nothing suspicious about the death. It was in his flat on Bodmin Road.
"The place is all due to be redeveloped. He was the last resident left there. He lived there alone." A Hampshire Constabulary spokeswoman confirmed his death was not suspicious.
"We were called to the address on Bodmin Road on 5 July at approximately 4.20pm to a non-suspicious death," she said.

Decapitated teen's head 'used as bowling ball'
SIMON O'BRIEN

A Brisbane man repeatedly stabbed and then helped decapitate a teenage boy in a "thrill kill", a court heard today.
James Patrick Roughan, 28, is on trial in Brisbane's Supreme Court, charged with the murder of 17 year-old Morgan Jay Shepherd.
It is alleged Roughan and another man, Christopher Clark Jones, 24, were drinking at Roughan's Sandgate home on March 29, 2005 when a fight broke out.
Roughan is accused of repeatedly punching and stomping on the boy before using a knife to stab him 133 times.
Jones has already been convicted of the murder.
"The body was then dealt with in a barbaric way," prosecutor David Meredith said.
"The head of the deceased was sawed or chopped off and it was seperated and not buried with the body.
"It appears on the face of it to be a thrill kill."
Mr Meredith said Jones also told friends that Roughan used the head like a puppet and a bowling ball, which Roughan denied.
The court heard Roughan and Jones' friends and neighbours would be called as witnesses in the trial and would tell the jury how the men, both of Sandgate, borrowed a car and then drove to Dayboro in Brisbane's north to bury Mr Shepherd's body in a shallow grave, before later burying him again.
The court was told Mr Roughan had already pleaded guilty to interfering with a corpse and being accessory after the fact to murder, but not guilty to murder.
However, prosecutors said the Crown would not accept the alternative charge because evidence would show Roughan was directly involved in the crime.
He said former friends of the men would give testimony that they had conversations in which Roughan was implicated in the murder and that a wound on Jones' hand was a result of Roughan accidently stabbing him while stabbing Mr Shepherd.
It is alleged that in one conversation, Jones claimed had Roughan stuck his hand up Mr Shepherd's decapitated head and "used it as a puppet", however Roughan denied it.
Roughan has pleaded not guilty to the murder charge.McCain's military draft: Are you willing to bet your life?
