Man blows 0.851 BAC in DUII stop

Wow, talk about some tollerance! This dude drank 20 litres of beer and was still alive with a BAC of 0.851. Just for reference, 0.40 is lethal more many people.

Mental note: never challenge anyone in Bulgaria to a drinking contest

about 8 years ago my upstairs neighbor fell off the roof and onto my doorstep.
At the hospital they found he had a blood alcohol content well into the 0.8 range. He didnt seem any more drunk than usual. He died a few hours later from the injuries sustained in the fall, not the alcohol. Serious alcoholics can tolerate a ridiculous BAC. The detectives who investigated the fall were unsurprised by the amount, they said they see that all the time.

I was thinking the same thing.. "Your honor, there is no way I could be alive to tell you my story if I blew a .851 unless I was some sort of super human."

He must have had unswallowed booze in his mouth to blow something that high.

Impressive, but it makes me sick that the guy went driving on public roads post-drinking binge.

They dont actually measure booze but the amount of CO2 in your exhalations to tell your bac.

Really? That's interesting. I always thought it measured the alcohol b/c it reads higher if you've just taken a drink vs 1 or 2 minutes later.

There is more than one kind -

                        * Breathalyzer - Uses a chemical reaction involving alcohol that produces a color change
                        * Intoxilyzer - Detects alcohol by infrared (IR) spectroscopy
                        * Alcosensor III or IV - Detects a chemical reaction of alcohol in a fuel cell
The last one is what is used in the field. It has a platinum electrode that is heated up to produce a voltage when the alcohol becomes oxidized.
