So is Chechnya to Russia. So was Thailand to China. US/Canada to England.

You catch my drift. People democratically decided, and now Georgia proclaims that their democracy is greater than Ossetia democracy.

Aug 7 (Reuters) - Fighting broke out between Georgian forces and separatists in breakaway South Ossetia on Thursday night, breaking a ceasefire just hours after the two sides had agreed to talks on Friday. Here are key facts about the region: -- South Ossetia, about 100 km (60 miles) north of the Georgian capital Tbilisi, broke away from Georgia in a 1991-92 war that killed several thousand people. It has close ties with the neighbouring Russian region of North Ossetia. -- The majority of the roughly 70,000 people living in South Ossetia are ethnically distinct from Georgians. They say they were forcibly absorbed into Georgia under Soviet rule and now want to exercise their right to self-determination. -- A peacekeeping force with 500 peacekeepers each from Russia, Georgia and North Ossetia monitors a 1992 truce. Tbilisi accuses Russian peacekeepers of siding with separatists, something Moscow denies. Sporadic clashes between separatist and Georgian forces have killed dozens of people in the last few years. -- Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili has proposed a peace deal under which South Ossetia would be given "a large degree of autonomy" within a federal state. The separatist leaders say they want full independence. -- The separatist leader is Eduard Kokoity. In November 2006, villages inside South Ossetia which are still under Georgian control elected a rival leader, ex-separatist Dmitry Sanakoyev. He is endorsed by Tbilisi, but his authority only extends to a small part of the region. (Reporting by Margarita Antidze, Tbilisi newsroom +995 32 983 961, margarita.antidze@reuters.com))

I guess how I look at this is this, Georgia had no right to cross boarders into the Ossetia region. They broke free back in 1991-92 just like Georgia broke away from the USSR back when.

Our government backs Georgia because they are a democratic country and is located really close to Russia. Georgia fought side by side with up to 2000 troops in the Iraq war. Bonding ties with the US even stronger. Georgia used this bond thinking that the US would back their invasion into the Ossetia region. The US really has its hand tied and would be foolish to support such actions.

But its a catch 22 on this one. Other countries that think the US has their backs might be finding out that America is not what everyone thinks it is. Allowing Russia and other Countries to start taking back what was once theirs without any repercussions. Thus losing allies that we consider necessary to hold world power.

It is really frightening the way Russia has attacked Georgia. Using hacking methods to knock down web based information. Carpet bombing and bruit force. Russia really showed their strength and showed the world that they dont really care what the rest of the world thinks.

Its a violent situation. Russia, China, Iran, and Venezuela are a combined deadly threat. China owns more treasury bills than any other country in the world, Russia and China huge military, and Iran and Venezuela produce enough oil to support Russia and China if a war broke out.

I for one feel we need to sit on the sidelines on this one and wait it out. Regroup our tactics and make aware that we are no longer world police. Build a strong defensive plan with the option to attack anywhere with an offensive.

This could set us back into a cold war and quite possibly the makings of WWIII.

that whole thing about 2012 keeps sounding more like it might be for real.......

I know how religion is taken on this forum, but, I's suggest some people start reading about the Gog-Magog War in the Bible. Mother Russia is the catalyst and root force. IF you believe that stuff.

Biblical Scripture reference. I was not "quoting" that site for accurate info, just a primer for those who choose to look deeper into said subject. I more was looking for the site I read about it on that had pictures because I know how r3v'ers are about images > text.

Read Genesis, Ezekiel 38-39, Revelation, the Qur'an (Yep, Islam shares similar beliefs.)

That's where I stop trying because I know someone really doesn't want to know. I only brought it to the table when someone else brought it up. Go on with political angles.

I don't see it as frightening, they stopped a military invasion into South Ossetia with the forces they had in the area which just so happen to be 10x what Georgia has. I mean all these claims of a disproportional reaction are BS, Russia's not just going to send an even amount of forces into Georgia. They are going to confirm victory and make sure they take as little loses as possible. The only confirmed case I have seen of Russian bombing civilians was when they missed a military target and hit an Apartment building. I have seen many many more cases of Georgian attacks on civilians, I mean the first video I saw of the conflict was Georgian Grads shooting at "separatist forces" in the South Ossetian capital, and Grads are really only used against large area targets, like a population center.

Also where did you hear about carpet bombing?
