jflip hit on part of that. We're tied with Canada, but spend 3x higher % of our GDP on military spending. Canada is pretty much junior when it comes to us. Of course, we're the highest % for a developed (IMO) nation, with France ironically right behind us.
We actually spend the most on military expenditures than anyone else, and 80% more than the EU COMBINED! We have 9 times the spending of 2nd place tie, the UK and China.
Without that spending, government would be much smaller as would the burden on the economy... but I feel fine as things are.
The nations more free than our include countries that behave like us in economic philosophy (UK) or nations who want to attract business (HK, Singapore) or places like Switzerland.
