I've recently sparked up an interest in photography. been trying to get a camera, and my dad finally goes: "oh, photography? here's this camera, i dont use it anymore". he gave me a Canon F1. can somebody shed some light on these cameras for me. i know its film, and i want to learn to develop my own photos myself. i'd just go google it, but i want personal feedback on this subject.

I have the same camera. My dad bought it in Okinawa during the Vietnam war. He recently gave it to me and I fuckin' love it. I really only use it for black and white shots because it's pretty cheap. Does it have the photomic head? The prism? Most of the photomic heads are out of calibration by now and even if it is still within spec, the batteries they use aren't made anymore. They were meant to use a mercury battery who's modern counterpart puts out a different voltage so the metering will be off. I always use a handheld light meter. Since my photomic head is a little off, I usually just shoot with the prism on. You should buy a book or take a class on how to use the right combination of aperture and shutter speed for perfect pictures. Developing is relatively simple, but you need a bunch of tools. Black and White enlargers can be had on Craigslist for like $150, but you'll need a shitload of accessories like trays, tongs, plates, chemicals, etc. I'd look for a class at a local community college or something. Here's a photo I took with it a while back. Have fun!
Edit: Haha oops just saw you said canon f1. I've got a Nikon F (sometimes called f1), but its similar.

Do some old school photo fun and enjoy the film camera. You can learn quick and it's cheap.
The f1 is also a great camera. It was one of canon's very first professional cameras. Keep it, enjoy it and learn.

Agreed, I've done a lot of B&W photography in my day. I used a Nikon F1 and currently have a Nikkromat. Early Canons are good as well. I'd say take a class at the local college. You'll have a lot of fun, learn how to process film, and get good subject ideas from your classmate's photo's.
I took these shots with my Nikkromat, developed the film, and had the local walmart scan the negatives for me.
Enjoy!!!
