This girl I used to date invited me out to her uncle's hangar in this small town in AZ called Casa Grande. He "did something with airplanes." We get there, and walk inside and he's got $20,000,000 worth of WWII aircraft sitting in various stages of being rebuilt- 4 Oscars ranging from nearly- completed to not begun to be refurbished, a Mustang that was being converted to a Reno racer (we talked about how dumb this project was) and one of 3 flyable (when it's finished) FW-190's being bankrolled b Paul Allen. The level of detail was insane.. if they needed a panel fastener, hinge, lock, or anything else they'd take it to a machine shop and say "make me this. Same dimensions, same material, exactly the same". Every electrical connection was hand-lettered to correspond with the actual German wiring diagrams, all-original radios, etc. Beautiful. Apparently it went down when some Polish people, forced to work on the planes, stuffed a rag in the oil tank. The plane made it off the ground to about 300 feet before the engine seized. He lived, and went to view the plane. Apparently he was this old, really, really short guy who walked with a walker, but he climbed up on that plane like he was 20 again. He didn't speak any english, but watched people talking about it in a language he didn't understand and said to his translator "It doesn't matter what language, you can always tell when someone's talking airplane".
As a side note, the guy that's restoring this plane's dad was shot down over Germany in a B-17.. by an FW-190.
Oh, and his shop foreman is his 21-year-old beautiful daughter with long brunette hair... I think I need to go visit again.
I fuckin love the Aviation world. the place is called Gosshawk Unlimited, and they specialize in P-51, T-28, T-6, and other classic warbird maintenance and repair.
I totally understand, the Sanders and Browns airport is 7 miles SE of my home base, had a 51 land here the other day with a gear door light problem on his way home from Reno and thought he had landed at Eagles Nest, nope over thataway ( points in the general direction ).
I have a friend ( sc00p ) who is good friends with Tom Dwelle owner of Critical Mass, I got a nice tour of thier hanger( s ) last year.
I love the air races, I go damn near every year. The last several have been pretty good. We ( sc00p and I) usually hook up with a couple of his British friends, both retired BA pilots, one was a Concorde captain, he has some great stories.
Here is a ( crappy ) pic of me in Rare Bear, we just happened to wander by the hanger a few years ago after the crew had got done swapping out the supercharger and we were shooting the shit with them, they broke out a bottle of Jack and we spent the next couple of hours shooting the shit and checking out the bear.
Here's a short vid of the winning P51 in the Unlimited Gold going by this year

Why does your face look so red in that picture? Are you making fighter plane noises?
