I use it to put holes in paper, and train for the day I'd need to use it to defend myself or my loved ones, if that day should ever come. I believe in being prepared for as many different scenarios as possible, and training for those scenarios is a fun hobby in itself. There's a saying I believe in that goes something like "You're only paranoid until something happens, then you're prepared". I find it unbelievable how many people, especially around my age (26), are so naive, and have such a false sense of security, entitlement in some cases, and a mindset that the government or mom and dad will help them if anything goes wrong. We have modern scenarios that have played out recently that show that's just not the case, and in the end we will always be left to fend for ourselves if something goes very, very wrong. How many residents of New Orleans do you think wished they had this particular rifle during Katrina or the LA riots? How about a reserve of canned food, a few gallons of water, and appropriate clothing? I myself have always owned a running, driving 4x4, even if it was an $800 Toyota that sat around for most of the year. I wouldn't be surprised if a few people replied to this post saying I'm paranoid, but I guarantee those are the same people who would be begging me to help them out if such a scenario ever occurred. I think this ties in with personal responsibility, and I feel I'm responsible for my own well being.
Definitely look for private party deals. Most shops are either backordered or severely gouging their customers. Spikes raised the price of their stripped lowers from $115 to $189 overnight, which is why I'll never own one of their products. I'm fortunate in that I have many friends in the firearms world after years of making contacts, so I don't have to worry about it as much as others. I will say that I think the price is going to come down and/or level off after a while, as long as I'm correct in hoping Obama will address real problems and refrain from attacking our constitutional rights, at least for a while.
I'm thinking I'll go with an AimPoint, but first I'd like to get Jenny's rifle built and get proficient with the irons :)
Good advice from this guy!
There's quite a debate regarding using an AR for home defense, with some saying the bullets fragment before penetrating walls and some saying their velocity is so high you risk putting your neighbors and others in jeopardy. Personally, I use a Remington 870 shotgun and/or a 1911 .45, as over penetration is a concern for me.
Every single bad habit you have can be fixed through proper training. An instructor I train with loves to say "Practice does not make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect". Make sure you know the correct method before you practice, or it'll most likely all be for nothing. Defensive training is well worth the investment.
There are so many quality guns out there now that it's really a matter of personal preference. Do you prefer an all metal gun such as the Beretta, a Sig, or a 1911, or are you comfortable with polymer guns such as Glocks, M&P's, XD's, etc.? I'd recommend you find a local range that rents guns and try a variety. What feels good in my hand might not feel good in yours, and that's important. You can find some excellent used guns for around $300-$350 if you shop around.
