With a 22" LCD TV he'd only get 720p, the 1080i and 1080p are resolutions that are not found on a TV of that screen size.
You can definitely pick something up for ~$400. For cheap, Bestbuy has one for $279.99 on their site plus shipping or store pick up. If your son is more of a choser than a begger, you can go with a good Sharp, Sony or Samsung LCD TV for your price range at tigerdirect.com, newegg.com, or amazon.com. It just depends if you want to deal with ordering off of website, but those three are reputable and have good prices.

No longer stock ride height, rolling as low as a daily driver in New England should without worrying about breaking an oil pan.

My 50" Samsung DLP is 720p, and it looks just as good, if not better, even on HD cable channels as my friend's 1080p plasma Pioneer.

Seriously though, I would think shipping a 22" flat panel would not be to bad (I just received 8 22" LCD flat panels for my business computers two months ago from Dell with no problems). I would worry more about the larger and heavier flat panels with the lazy ass UPS drivers throwing them around. These things come packed really well, just get some insurance on shipping it just in case. Or send him the loot and let him get it.

These things are incredibly light. They're packed in real tight and the box can be carried much easier than a particleboard desk for sure. The 52" Sharp Aquos I speced out for my grandpa was so light I carried it myself, granted it was awkward since it was a pretty big box.

check newegg.com as well. They seem to do pretty well and I just picked up a 40" lcd from them and service was top notch!Build your own dreams, or someone else will hire you to build theirs!
