You just add music from your hard drive to the iTunes library and then sync the music in the library over to the iPod. When you import music to iTunes it still stays in the file's original location on your hard drive. The only trace of your iPod being used on computer is probably just a few megabytes through iTunes preferences, if at all. Then again I did just get an iPod since my Creative Zen player died and I haven't explored it entirely.

If it's on the iPod and you don't have it set to auto sync you don't need the music on your computer at all. But be sure it's not on auto sync before you delete it all.

so if it is on auto sync it will store the music on my hard drive, but if i turn off the auto sync then delete it, what happens when i plug the ipod back into the computer? what if it is on auto sync when i plug it back in?

sorry, i am new to this!

If it's on auto sync when you plug it in your iPod will get erased if there's no music on the computer.

I manually manage my songs, if you click on your ipod in the left bar theres a check box that says manually manage music. Then you drag and drop what you want on your ipod and theres no syncing for music.

I have like 150gb of music, and an 8gb player, so its not like I can sync it all up lol.

then if you delete the music off your computer, it will stay on your ipod still.

How do you think I feel at over 200GB of music, plus a bunch of movies?

Do NOT trust your iPod. Keep all of your shit on at least 2 hard drives. I have 3 or 4 complete backups, soon to be a few more...some of my buddies have a copy of all my shit.

When you get it done, download a copy of Microsofts "Sync Toy" and use it to update and copy the stuff on the hard drive.

You should be able to find 120GB hard drives on CL for about $35. Do not lose all of your shit to general laziness!!! (ask me how I know).

Everyone should use WinAmp to manage their iPods... it's just so much better and it doesn't matter who's iPod you plug into your computer, you can rip tracks straight to your hard drive. And itunes is a piece of shit.

If you are worried about 18 gigs of hard drive space, you definitely either need a new hard drive or a new computer altogether

Go buy yourself a 1000gb hard drive for a hundred bucks and worry no more.
