And did you not see the no private property rule? Granted you could argue road and rail bridges, light poles (stickers) etc... belong to all of us since its government property. BUT the point is not to ruin anyone's personal property. That's just cruel why would I want to destroy someones fence that they worked for so their kids can play in the back yard?

"the buff" is what you call that ugly grey or off white paint they put over all graffiti. Sadly it actually makes things look worse in my opinion.

The broken windows theory states that as an area of a town/city contains more run down/deserted buildings (broken windows), graffiti, etc... (more things to make it look unclean) an increase in crime (gangs, drugs, muggings etc....) will occur. I generally say the causes of both are tied in with socioeconomic background of the residents rather than how things look.

This is the definition of a straw-man argument. Why are you bringing up an out-dated social theory that no one believes in? Don't they teach you to put together a logical, coherent argument in your university? No one here is saying that tagging is bad because it leads to urban decay. We're saying tagging is bad because it's (a) disrespectful, and (b) reflects the immaturity and egoism of the tagger.

I don't know why you think I painted because of some "grand statement of society". I painted because I enjoyed it and I never made any Che, Mao, Stalin etc.... political references. Its over played.

Also, its easy to say half of my friends don't know that I painted and the other half that does, don't know what I painted (stupid idea to tell people what you painted, since its illegal. duh) The only people that know what I painted are people I went out with.

Whoa, granted I think that social theory is wrong (gross oversimplification of the issue). But, politicians still campaign and try to enforce tougher anti-graffiti laws because of it. So I would not say its outdated.

I'm not arguing that its not disrespectful when interpreted by certain groups (if its on personal property or public art or older buildings that have worth to society {100+ year old, protected} I completely agree with you. Graffiti doesn't belong there). But I won't agree it reflects the immaturity and egoism of the person in question. Granted there are a lot of writers out there that all have their own motivations and some fit that description, but not all.
