A small update on this...as they are talking about it on the news now. The city has now changed how they will alert people before power is shut off.

Also they said he had a large sum of money on his table when they found him with the bill.

Power was not turned off but limited to 10 Amps....

I think this has nothing to do with Obama. sheesh

While it sad that he died, the power company gave him 2 notices that they were going to shut off his power. If he had the money to pay it (as he seemed to have), why didn't he pay it?

blame the electric companies all you want.. where were the fucking neighbors?!? you say the gov't should have a sense of accountability, how about the people of the community. I just don't get how you can let your own neighbor die like that.

That's what America has become. Even in suburbia people are closed off and disconnected, they don't put forth the effort to have a sense of community anymore. This is why I've made friends with all my neighbors, even the guy that a few houses down who is in his 80's and lived in the area since it was nothing but dirt. If you make the effort to bring a sense of community in your area it can only help.

The neighboors are who found him, 2 days (I believe) after it was turned off.

How many people knock on their neighboor's doors everyday and even just say hello? I don't and I am fairly friendly with my neighboors.

But what if they don't? My mom volunteered for a cause in Florida one winter. I met a WWII pilot that was all alone. He had screwed over his wife and children. All he had left was his memories of his life. I only met him the one time.

I was the last person to see him alive. He blew his brains out 2 days later.

I'm not saying anything is right or wrong, but it's a sad thing that people can be tossed aside with no one these days whether they deserve it or not.

i dont know, call me selfish i guess. i look after my own. i make sure my mother has everything she needs. however she and my father were sensible and wise as far as looking out for the future. we are all responsible for our future. im not saying this poor old dude wasnt responsible because i dont know the circumstances but i guarantee you i wont be looking for the government to care for me when im old (er) and crusty (er).
but thats the direction we are heading. cradle to grave government

Don't worry guys, this will be a thing of the past, as long as you do your 14 hrs labor each day, you will be fed, housed, and cared for in a wonderful "O" Townhome, recieve "O"-Cards to purchace all your needs, which will be subtracted from your total colony production. And we will finally install Tesla's "Wireless Electricity" system.

still, they should have some sort of policy for not shutting down power during a cold snap, but I don't see how they are obligated to keep him supplied with power when he wasn't paying for it.
My last months electric bill was $180 and natural gas $150. It adds up fast...

Minnesota has a law in place to prevent just this sort of thing. The Electric and Gas Companies cannot disconnect service durring the winter months.
