I am not following you there... how do you not have multiple drivers in an active system?

    1 amp channel per driver..

Sorry, I though you were talking about something like Bose Acoustimass speakers where you have a midbass driver in one box and tweeters in separate boxes.

I'm not aware of any home audio speaker systems with multiple drivers of different sizes/types in the same box with separate inputs for each driver.

Same box or not, was just explaing the difference between active and passive systems.

TDE - Crossovers can be passive (big caps/coils/resistors) you see before the tweeters/mid/woofers OR active before the amplifier (in the pre-amp stage), in terms of op-amps or small circuits. There are advantages and disadvatages to both sides as with anything else...

Ah, I see, the name makes sense now.

Another question, what do you guys think about some entry-level Magnepan ribbon speakers? These are the ones in question.

uh oh.. the word "bose" has just been uttered in a thread visited by audiophiles. all useful discussion will soon cease. but i digress...

in my opinion, the best bang for your buck is a good source + good headphones. www.head-fi.org if you dare. i currently am using headrooms microdac -> microamp -> sennheiser hd650 , though i do prefer my denon d2000's over the hd650's. however a high quality headphone setup is really only an option when 1.) you're stationary and 2.) you're alone. if you want to be doing other things or entertain multiple people, youll want to go down a different road. or you could have both, but as i can attest it gets expensive REAL fast.

im too cheap to go out and buy nice speakers, so i started building my own. i went with the mini statements that i found through this forum: http://htguide.com/forum/forumdisplay.php4?f=6 they sound very good, especially when driven through a nice amp (emotiva xpa-5 in my case). what i like best about speakers is visceral bass impact, something you just cant get headphones. that said, my headphones definitely have better sound quality than the speakers. but really they are for two different purposes and i enjoy both equally.

Read my previous posts and it should be pretty obvious what I think about Bose

No highs, no lows, if it is Bose, it blows.

I have a Jolida 302B tube amp (EL34s) that gets fed by a Numark Turntabe (sucks) into a NAD Phono Pre-amp. The Jolida can be seen at the top of my rack. This setup gets fed into either 3 sets of speakers, JBL L26 (fantastic), JBL L99, or Polk Audio Monitor 10s (epic). If I have to use a CD player, I use a NAD 5325 or my converted Sony Playstation 1, which has a famed D/A converted. I modified it and recased it. This player can be seen also on my rack with an exposed CD.
That's old school with the tubes. Marantz and MacIntosh Tuners were the shit back in the day (Not the MacIntosh that makes computers)
