It's bad because it is a "minority tax", sometimes also associated with a "sin tax". It is a way for the Government to make sure a bill passes or gets the majority of voter's to agree with it. "Ah, it doesn't affect me, and look, it is going to the children, so it's good, right?". Hogwash. Same thing happened here in Oregon multiple times. I would guess that 75% of the cost of a can of Cope, or a pack of smokes is tax.
I am not advocating smoking or chewing. They are both nasty and harmful habits. However, these types of taxes are wrong. Sooner or later, they'll nail you with one of these taxes. How about a BMW tax? BMW is a luxury vehicle right? Let's tax all BMW's 10% of the sales price. I am sure the majority of voters would go for it.
Oh, and btw, if you chew, and want to avoid all those stupid state taxes, try www.snusworldwide.com. They have the best quality stuff and it costs about 20% less, even when you add in shipping. I quit about a year ago, but some of you might find it useful.1987 E30 325is

I dont oppose cig or chew taxes. It is a nasty habit. I do oppose misappropriated use of the taxes however. Which is bound to happen. I think alot of people also dont realise that alot of the taxing on tobacco products is due to a large influence from the healthcare lobby, who dont like paying big bucks when someone needs a lung transplant.
On the Fuel tax: What is wrong with a large tax on fuel? Say there was a tax on fuel that kept the fuel prices stable, say, $3 a gallon. When crude is cheaper, more goes into the coffers for road construction and repair. When it is more, less does. But it stabilizes the consumer market, prevents lulls in traveling and reduces stress on transportation and delivery markets from spikes in energy costs.

Explain to me how a high demand product like oil getting slapped with a huge tax is going to stablized it's market.
People don't stop buying gas because the price goes up.
And to tax something so people "get used to not using it" is criminal. The general public have nothing to do with our getting off of our own dependancy for oil.
Better get your Snickers bars and Ice cream hord going, those are next.
How about our government clean up the way they spend our money!Your signature picture has been removed since it contained the Photobucket "upgrade your account" image.

Alcohol, at least in Oregon, is already taxed a ton.
I think most places tax alcohol. Most unnecessary consumables are.
In CA, I think there's around ~38 cents a gallon for the LA area. I sure hope they don't bump it up a dollar, but if they do they're screwing themselves over. When gas gets more expensive, people buy less, contradictory to what the oil companies thought. But since the gas tax is flat and not % of sale based, the government loses money when less gas sells and they don't want that. I don't really think 1$ tax is in the government's favor, considering the again rising cost of fuel.
It's gotten bad enough that they are making freaking electric super cars now.

I could give two shits if someone has to pay $0.60 more per pack of smokes.
My health insurance went up from $85/month to $155/month as of March 1.
I'm 24, in good shape, with phenomenal cholesterol levels. I haven't been to the doctor in 5 years, except a few months ago to get my cholesterol tested because I was curious about the numbers.
Yet they want to double my health insurance?
If you're going to bitch about paying more to kill yourself, you're bitching to the wrong person.
