For you fans of sportscar and sports prototype endurance racing, let me highly recommend the forthcoming Truth in 24 documentary. It will air on ESPN, 8pm, March 20th... standard and hi-def.
I was fortunate to have been able to attend an Audi Club screening at VW/Audi corporate headquarters last night.
The film is another fantastic piece from from Intersport and NFL Films following the Audi Sport team through the early 2008 season leading up to the nailbiting 24 Heures du Mans. If you remember, the Audi R10's had finally shown cracks in their machinery leaving the Peugeot 908's poised to knock them from the podium for the first time in years. Direct injected turbo diesel technology had dominated FIA enduros from the day it bowed but 2008 would see two different teams sip and zip their way 'round the clock for the checker.
Narrated by the inimitable Jason Statham, whose Transporter films have prominently featured Audis in some incredible driving scenes, Truth in 24 delivers. Despite knowing the outcome of last year's Le Mans, I was on the edge of my seat for the film. Throughout we were treated to behind the scenes action, radio chatter, and honest, often humorous interviews and bites from all over the team as they marched toward the duel with Peugeot. Produced in that award-winning NFL Films way, the total package was fantastic.
At one point in the film, Allan McNish is on camera walking us through a lap at Le Mans... he is sitting watching in-car video but mentally, no spiritually, in the car as he speaks describing the track, gear changes, visual cues, and the feeling of a lap of Circuit de La Sarthe. It takes three and half minutes... and our audience erupted in applause just at this one scene. There is no movie making magic here, just a real racer and real connection that somehow reaches all the way through the screen to the center of other drivers. It was awesome!
So, if you're planning to spend your Saturday the 21st watching the 12 Hours of Sebring that kicks of the American Le Mans Series for 2009, consider whetting your appetite with Truth in 24 the night before. You will not be sorry!
