I just got an iphone, only because it was the best pda phone for the money from AT&T.. So far, definitely prefer android hands down. I jailbroke my phone almost immediately so I could get apps that Apple frowns upon, and get free apps. SSHing into my server is a complete pain in the ass.. No F keys totally kills it for me, and the keyboard is just convoluted to use through command line (and no I'm not having problems mis typing, it's just convoluted to use because you have to click through menus for different symbols).

I went into this purchase not expecting much, and that's what I got. It's a good deal for $99, but it's nothing amazing and I have no idea why people make such a big deal out of this mediocur piece of technology..

btw, I think the firmware comes out today

3.0 was officially avial. to download at 10am pacific for me. So far the OS seems quicker and all the new little add-in's are great. Ive already used the spotlight search, voice recorder for an entire 2.5 hr meeting, and the horizontal email to write up a review. I havent really got to play with it much.

What cell phone has F keys? How is tapping on a single button that takes you to whole new keyboards of symbols convoluted? I dont think they had SSHing in mind when they where developing the phone. I really dont see you point on it being a "mediocre piece of technology", the phone was pretty ahead of the game 2 years ago and now the 3Gs is even faster.

I think your expecting the phone to be something it wasnt designed to be, in your case, a netbook may better suit your needs.

            Android= no bueno

Not a fan at all, my brother owned one, I used it on numerous ocasions.
The iPhone is great because of it's versatility. You need a unit calculator? Download one.
You need a fun time killer? Guess what it's in that app store. Yea Andriod has apps as well, but thier apps are like gps, great gps because my iphone doesn't come with it pre installed. Take an iphone; take all of it's basic functions out; sell them in a half assed app store = andriod.

BTW Dev team will be releasing their unlock for 3.0 on friday. T-mobile's unlimited everything plan for $15 a month becuase of my brothers employee discount ftw.

3.0 came out today and no video recording for my iPhone 3G

              Boo!

Looks like I might have to jailbreak my phone.

Now that I've installed 3.0, is it possible to go back to 2.2.1 and jailbreak it?

Or can I jailbreak it with 3.0 installed?

3.0 has a few enhancements, but nothing major.

The "Search" feature is nice, as is copy/cut and paste.

But my old RAZR phone can do video recording but this one can't.

Either way, it's still a kick ass phone and I got the refurbed 16GB for $199 last spring.

I have about 10GB of music and 3.5 GB of vid on it.

Been running 3.0 on my 3G for about a week without any issues. I need to rejailbrake so I can get some terminal access and other random apps again.

I hacked in MMS and Tethering, so far both work fine, I also appear to have less dropped calls on 3G.

I get my 32GB 3GS on Friday hopefully (according to AT&T at least), so I'll update on how that thing works at that time.

I am not really impressed with the 3.0 firmware. The only thing it really did for me was the landscape email and texting. I have the first gen 8gig phone, and this release is bc. I can tether, I can't mms, i can't record video, i can't do voice commands etc. I would upgrade to the 3gs, but their $199, $299 pricing is bullshit unless you aren't under contract with AT&T. Since I am, I would have to pay something retarded like $599 for a 16 gb 3gs. Fuck that.

get the 3g for 100 then. its a good deal, alot of phones are above that price and cant do shit. I like the idea of apple trying to make these phones that are ahead of the tech curve available to everyone in a sense (100 bucks is still a good chunk of change for my wallet)

What other manufacturers actually upgrade the firmware though like Apple has?

Very few companies allowed people to upgrade windows mobile from 5 to 6, certain blackberries never got updates.

The Iphone 2G/Edge is pretty old now, be thankful they are giving you any updates at all.

Yeah, that is what I will do. I really don't have an issue with my phone right now except it doesn't have GPS. It has been to hell and back, and the only problem I've had was a stuck lock button. The thing was cycling off and on constantly so I had to take the thing apart. I'll get one once mine takes a shit.

Sure, they update their firmware, but why should I be thankful that it is simply because they left those features out originally? My POS phone in high school recorded video, did MMS etc. I had to jailbreak mine to get it to do most of the stuff that I wanted it to do.

It is a very clever way to do business, and it is working beautifully for them. Hell, it's not even Apple that is pissing me off, it's AT&T because they won't give me a good price on a new iphone, even if I sign a new contract.

Also, are you using PdaNet to tether your iphone?

the video and voice commands only work on the 3G S. once att gets its shit together you will be able to do MMS.

Call them up, say you are beta testing 3.0 MMS functionality for software development and would you please enable it.

I used PDANet when I was jailbroken, at the moment I'm running the AT&T 4.0 Carrier file which enables MMS and Tethering support.
