lol the only thing that might be anywhere close is the palm pre...
Pre dominates the iphone IMO, I've used both. Now I'm spoiled with multitasking. The fact the phone is running linux, and you can root into it with SSH is blowing my mind. I'm geeking out on mine.

You can do the same with an unlocked iphone. I loved being able to do that because I could just put ringtones on the phone as well as apps and other shit. it allowed me to get my videos off the phone too.
Right now I'm down to a few possibilities as iphone contenders. I've discounted a few already.
Sprint - The Palm Pre, already tested it out. Didn't realize how tiny it is. I like it but I'm not completely sold on the keyboard, feels a bit cheap.
Verizon - BlackBerry Storm or LG enV Touch VX11000. To touchscreen keyboard or not. Both of these are considerably less than the Pre as well.
In the end I'm thinking it's just a phone.
If I don't want an iphone I'll go with the Touch or Storm because why spend the money on the Pre if I'm not completely sold on it. In 2 years there will be even more companies with hopefully a real iphone killer on a network I prefer. Every smart phone seems to have a down fall somewhere. Maybe in 2 years there will be some phones that bake you a cake and they eat you too.

It all depends on what you need your phone for first and foremost.
Do you wanna have apps and surf the web?
Or do you want legit push email?
Or do you want great coverage, since its just a phone?
Theres a phone out there for everyone right now. Iphone is not the end all be all, but its certainly a good phone. The Storm is a good phone, but is still a child. The pre is a baby, and it will only get better.
IMHO, the most solid all around phone out right now is the new Blackberry Curve models. Note I said "all around".
