If I'm not drinking beer or wine, it's manhattens and vodka waters. Or some good Irish Whiskey.

i'll have to give this a try, huge manhattan fan hereCan't believe I've missed this thread. Man, aside from a few of you, it's total amateur-hour in here LOL.
Any of the local guys can attest to the fact that I'm a little bit of a cocktail nerd, but also a student and fan of the trade. I find the history of it really interesting.
My recent favorite has been the Saratoga Cocktail. It's extremely easy to make, and tastes delicious. It's essentially a Manhattan with a portion of the whiskey replaced with brandy. It's from c. 1880, and named after Saratoga Springs, which was a gambling/drinking hotspot at the time. I believe it first appeared in print in the 1887 edition of Jerry Thomas' Cocktail Guide. Anyhow, on to the good part...
I'll preface the recipe by saying, as a spirit based cocktail, you'll want to use the best ingredients possible. A cask-strength Rye such as Thomas Handy, really gives it some teeth.

Saratoga Cocktail
1oz Rye Whiskey
1oz Brandy
1oz Sweet Vermouth
2 dashes Angostura Bitters
Stir with ice and strain into a glass. See, wasn't that easy?
A pic of our home bar. As you can see, we have a lot of fun LOL.

Whiskey and Scotch fan here....either straight or if I'm feeling it, cut with a little water. My favorite mixed drink is probably the ol' mint julep. Amazing. Also love a rusty nail or manhattan.Leave a comment:

Martini Bianco is a dry vermouth. That's really just a version of a modern vodka martini. You can vary the ratios all you like... just however you like it. I've never heard of putting soda in it. Try squeezing a lemon peel over the top so the oil floats atop the liquid. That Saratoga cocktail sounds good I'll have to try that out.
Does anyone know the proper name for this drink:
2 oz. Vodka
1 oz. Sweet white vermouth (martini bianco)
Served on the rocks, shot of soda if you like. I guess it isn't much of a real cocktail with only 3 ingredients but the vermouth totally kills the taste of alcohol, it's dangerous.
I can't for the life of me find a name for it.
The Martinez was the predecessor of what we now call a Martini.
Martinez Cocktail
1 1/2 oz Hayman’s Old Tom Gin - any good gin works
3/4 oz Carpano Antica Sweet Vermouth - red
Scant teaspoon Luxardo Maraschino
Dash Angostura Orange Bitters

You should have a summer drink and a winter drink and stick to them. I drink gin and tonics in the summer and bourbon and gingers in the winter.Leave a comment:

Old Fashioneds are pretty easy to make at home. There are a lot of good Bourbons in the ~$40 range too. Angostura Bitters are super cheap, and available at any liquor store.
There's a lot of satisfaction that comes from making your own as well.Leave a comment:
