Ok camera guys.. I need your help.

Nikon and Canon are both excellent, either is a fine choice. Play with both and choose the one that feels more comfortable and whos controls make the most sense.

Personally I'm a Canon guy, through and through. The new T1i is a lot of camera for the money. 3" screen, 15mp, HD video, 3.4fps, live view...very hard to go wrong with that camera as a first time DSLR buyer. I've always found Canon's to be easier for a new SLR user to pick up and learn and get solid results from. Keep in mind...the camera is only as good as your grasp of it. If you don't know how to use it, what's the point in even getting it. That is where Canon shines in my opinion.

FWIW, I sold cameras for 3.5 years and am a semi-pro photographer. Working on the new website here. All those photos were taken with the Rebel XT or XTi. I have finally outgrown the Rebel body (after 8 years of shooting digital) and am upgrading to either the 50D or the 5D Mark II.

x2...thats were people fail. they buy these good bodys and a cheap lens and they think there good to go.when in fact its kinda the other way around.
bodys come n go,glass stays forever!

Agreed with the Canon. Don't get a Nikon unless you get a very good deal on it.

i enjoy my nikon. i couldnt do anything other then a d80+ though. just due to the fact your auto focus motor isnt found in the d40. d60, etc. i have enjoyed xti's tho. i feel like canons seem too over expose the image? really i think id find myself reccomending an xt or xti for a starter. good features, easy use, lots of room to grown etc.

I don't have the money for something really nice and i need the money from this to grab something newer.

And I have an optimistic price set for my d40 but it's in perfect shape and I don't need to sell it. So if I get the money great if not then i keep it, which isn't all bad.

But my d40 is for sale!

i sold a d40x on here not too long ago. it only took like 15-30 minutes to sell.

i just bought a d60, but the part of me that forgets i don't have any money is already planning on what to buy next. i definitely miss the HD video i had in my old non-dslr camera. i will probably end up buying whatever the successor to the D90 is. the D300 is just far too expensive. but i guess it just depends on what i can afford at the time...

you wont get much for a d40 body (look on craigslist...people are optimists). i think you should keep it and use it as a "beater" body so to speak. or you could sell it, but you never know when it will come in handy.

i picked up my d40 not too long ago and i love it, i am still learning all the setting and such but i would recommend it to anyone looking to get a camera. though i do wish it would take videos, which apparently Nikon is doing soon....damn my bad timing

I find the lower level nikons (d40 and d60) to feel much higher quality than the lower level canon's. Start moving up a bit and then I think it's more personal preference and individual (specific) features that matter between the two.

just fyi the d40(x) and d60 are being discontinued soon if they haven't already in order to make room for the D3000.

if one is willing to wait until (i am guessing) the fall, they could have the brand spanking new entry level camera, which will probably include HD video also.

the d40s a great camera. It really helps you master the basics and learn the settings etc etc youll need to start photography. Overall you wont be disappointed for a first camera if anything you will be impressed at the pics you can take with it.

i agree with daniel here, i love my d60 and would love to hear why you think the cannon 40d or cannon in general is so much better?

as far as lenses they are of course very expensive, but it you buy a nikon and you have a lense from say and old 35mm from way back, it will still fit on your d40, or d60, or other. i think that is great feature to have.

why a 40d is so much better than a d60? or why canon is better than nikon?

more of a comparison would probably be a d200/d300.
d60 is entry grade,if that.40d is semi pro. there not even in the same league..at all
