as far as lenses they are of course very expensive, but it you buy a nikon and you have a lense from say and old 35mm from way back, it will still fit on your d40, or d60, or other. i think that is great feature to have.

i just bought a d60 kit with the 18-55VR kit lens. took it on 2 week stint through europe for my first time ever using it. it produced AWESOME pictures even in the hands of a complete newb (me). my gf bought a canon sd1100 for the same trip, and side by side the d60 produced better color and just more impressive pictures. Only prior experience was a p&s but I was (or at least told myself i was) hitting the limits, particularly fast-motion stuff, ie races, and low light photography.
I read ken rockwells bashing of the d60 but bought it anyway. the price i got for the VR kit plus a case, memory card, card reader, etc, made it worth it. The VR lens alone was almost enough reason for me to get the 60 over the 40. His review is a bit outdated as the price gap between the two has shrunk, i believe.
Keep in mind both the 40 and 60 need lenses with internal focus motors, so if this is a hobby that you think you'll stick with, you may be better off off the bat getting a camera that can drive every lens, which i believe starts with the D70+?
To me canon was not even in the question. Not really sure I can provide any hard evidence as to why, just ALL the photogs i know and ones i bothered during my shopping all use and wholeheartedly recommended nikon.
check out cameta camera on amazon, they had the best price when i bought about 2 months ago. they're also listed on nikon USA's website as an authorized dealer.
All that said, if i were still in the market, i'd seriously consider that new D5000 or whatever it is with the video capability.
Good luck. bit of a ramble, but hope it helps.

why a 40d is so much better than a d60? or why canon is better than nikon?
more of a comparison would probably be a d200/d300.
d60 is entry grade,if that.40d is semi pro. there not even in the same league..at all
2nd question-niether,there both just as good as each other,if anybody says they arent there retarded.lol

I find the lower level nikons (d40 and d60) to feel much higher quality than the lower level canon's. Start moving up a bit and then I think it's more personal preference and individual (specific) features that matter between the two.Originally posted by z31maniacI just hate everyone.

if one is willing to wait until (i am guessing) the fall, they could have the brand spanking new entry level camera, which will probably include HD video also.

And I have an optimistic price set for my d40 but it's in perfect shape and I don't need to sell it. So if I get the money great if not then i keep it, which isn't all bad.

i just bought a d60, but the part of me that forgets i don't have any money is already planning on what to buy next. i definitely miss the HD video i had in my old non-dslr camera. i will probably end up buying whatever the successor to the D90 is. the D300 is just far too expensive. but i guess it just depends on what i can afford at the time...

Get a used Nikon D200 or a Cannon 30D and spend your money on good glass..I'm Not Right in the Head | Random Rants and other Nonsense1st Order Logic Failure: Association fallacy, this type of fallacy can be expressed as (∃x ∈ S : φ(x)) → (∀x ∈ S : φ(x)), meaning "if there exists any x in the set S so that a property φ is true for x, then for all x in S the property φ must be true".
