Second one looks pretty decent, but the first one is just a total travesty for me. Great first attempt though. I have been noticing now that the initial HDR craze has died off that most people are going for more real than surreal HDR pictures. If you have Photoshop CS4 try the HDR in there. Nobody liked it at first, because it didn't look entirely unreal like the Photomatix shots, but now that that trend has died off, a lot of people are using it. With PS HDR though, you do still have to have photoshop skills, lots of dodging and burning still, but you can get amazing results from it that people can actually look at for more than 30 seconds.
yeah these were just a couple using the photomatix presets. i'm more interested in exposure blending or whatever as opposed to tone mapping. next time i'll pull out my tripod. that will help with the sharpness for sure.
Exposure blending is what Photoshop is all about. I noticed you are in Portland, if you aren't a student already, apply for PCC, get a student ID number then order the educational version of Photoshop, it's under $100 fully licensed.
Nice job. I like the second the best too. So you took 5 shots at different exposures and then layered them using various levels of opacity? Then did the HDR effects on that sandwich of layers?

i can't take that much credit for the shot. it's more like 1. take 5 exposures, 2. convert to tiff or jpeg, 3. open files in photomatix, 4. wait a few seconds, 5. play with color/sharpness/etc. settings, 6. save.
These pics are awesome man, they look like paintings, number two and number three are fucking amazing!!

NOt to knock you, im sure thats the look you were going for, and kudos for acheiving it on the first try, but i'm not a fan of HDR
there are natural-type HDRs, too. They are harder to recognize as HDR because of the reduced amount of tone-mapping. Next time I do some I will show the difference.
