I have a degree in transportation design from ArtCenter in Pasadena....and now i'm spending my nights on an e30 board with a lot of student loans.

No, but really I work in the 3D/CGI Automotive business now. Can't make it this weekend, but I've been meaning to actually meet some local e30 guys one of these days. All in good time, this thread inspired me to dust off out some of my old work and share.

Had my heart set on design; even took a concurrent online beginners class with the Art Academy las winter. Was at the top of my class... Any way /vent

good deeds man! im trying to push myself to go through with the application process
at ACCD for some time now, id be in for graphics though. with any luck ill make the
deadline for scholarships on Oct1.

come out to the VanNuys meets its usually the last friday of every month, at "the plant" check the SoCal boards, best most consistent meet though.


anyway, i should contribute some of my own work to the thread...

Damn it man, your living my dream!! My parents can't even be open minded bout what I want to do with my life and it's messing with my head like now IDK what I want to do any more... Congrats with your field of work man, I understand the level of difficulty in finding work.

Dude don't give up man. There are scholarships, student loans, financial aid. A buddy of mine didn't have any help from his parents, but he's also about $220K in the hole. :( It's up to you. ACCD is super expensive and if you are under 25 my advice to you is to find yourself a little more in design/art/engineering whatever it may be, and then when you're a little older and wiser you'll have a better design sense and more dedication if you decide to drop $100K+ on an education that has an extremely competitive job placement rate.

Also there are lots of cheap classes with Stan Kong at Pasadena City College (if he's still there). Art Academy in SF is afforable and isn't a horrible program. Not the caliber of ACCD, but I actually work with a guy who went there and he is pretty dope. Night classes at ArtCenter aren't cheap, but for a $1k you can get an idea of the kind of things you'll be doing. I mean if you're dedicated and have a passion for it, you can almost go anywhere. Just think if you would be doing this on your free time anyway then there is no reason why you can't do it. There are ways.

Also there is a lot to be said about the money. I don't want to be too negative, but when I enrolled at 21 I had no idea about the financial implications. Once you get out and make your own money you start to realize how much it was.

I dont have much doubts that i cant get in. i get plenty of positive vibes and comments on my
work from administration and professors both at ACCD and PCC, took an 'at night' class to really
feel out what ArtCenter would be like, and im hooked :( it is a shitload of money, but there are many
many ways. A friend of mine who transfered from PCC (last i knew) was in her seventh term and
only had incurred a 50k debt. Its all about how hard you can really push yourself i think.

I know im going to miss the social life, but can you really complain once its all said and done?
I've had some of the most memorable moments working deep into the night on graphics.
One of the things that i most fear about starting art center, is the end of it, for what it costs, it should
last a bit longer don't you think?

so to NicFlic3 - push it if you really want it and think you can make it, also like hotballs said, feel things
out at JC's and public programs, you might think you're into transportation but might really excel at
illustration, vice versa, and any other discipline.

I don't count on the help from my parents not that they wouldn't i don't doubt them, but i wouldn't
want to bear them with such 'burden'. So im going to do it based on scholarships, financial aid, and
loans, ill be in a hole for a bit after school is over, but its all worth it in the end.

Thanks for the encouragement guys, I guess it's always better to "hear it from the horses mouth" as my dad always says. Everyone I talk to about design is biased thinking I won't have a good life cuz most of my family are either doctors or nurses. Right now I'm thinking about getting a degree in nursing informatics then using the money from that to fund design school. Once again it's cool to hear advice from those who are actually doing it :)

yea make it out, its no longer just e30's though it its majority, all euro cars are
welcome. I alwyas enjoy a well done 36 ///M :D

just graduated high school right? its not that bad a plan, but you really got to
knock it out quick, and in the meantime you can pick up clases on the public
system, that way you also get to try out a couple of different disciplines quick and
easy, see what's really for you :up: either way good luck!

I do Industrial Design as well, I currently go to F.I.T but I am Tryin to transfer to Pratt. I'm not down with the CAD, 'cause i dont know how to use it very well :(. I prefer prismacolor markers and my trusty sketch book. I also have a small clothin line and to custom nikes.

get a marker pad, you wont suck your markers dry as quick, and it just plain out looks better. The paper doesn't have a tooth.

talking about markers, i dug up a few of my pages from Stan Kongs rendering class at PCC, take it as inspiration nickflick3


this is how i started out the class... taking about 35-40 minutes to do this goofy representation of basic shapes...


then Stan kicked my ass through the semester, and i was pumping out these pages in about 5 minutes each...








and finished the semester with a photorealistic rendering that was bananas, and i can't
for the life of me find it right now.
