During the early growth years of F1 drivers were quite expendable. John Cooper turnned F1 inside out when he introduced the mid-engined car. From there, the British "garaginistas" like Colin Chapman stepped in and dominated F1. Meanwhile the mortality rate grew until Jackie Stewert said "enough is enough"
BBC did a fabulous documentary on this, and it hasn't been shown in the US, at least not yet. No problem, You Tube has it.
Warning; there is footage you've likely never seen before, and some of it is pretty strong. Its what the real world of F1 was like in the 60's-70's.
