Photoshop help - program having issues

I'm having a problem with Photoshop CS locking up on my computer. Usually, everything runs just fine, cropping pics, resizing, making borders, adding text, until I go to perform an action such as filling in an area with color, erasing large areas, or using the paintbrush tool to fill in large areas. Suddenly, PS will just lock up, and I'll have to ctrl+alt+del to exit the program.

It seems to be that it happens when I perform large functions such as those, but lately it's been doing it no matter what I'm doing. It's been doing this since the fresh install on my newly built computer, with more than enough processing power and ram to run the program. I'm running a P4 3.0 Prescott and 1 gig of Corsair ValueSelect DDR.

Something that I've noticed when I go to ctrl+alt+del to close the program, is there are TWO instances of Adobe Photoshop running, both of them showing "not responding". I hit end task on either one of them, they both dissapear, and Photoshop closes. I know that there's only one instance of the program open, yet the program manager shows 2. Only one is shown as running in the "processes" tab, but there are 2 under the "applications" tab.
