E12s are pretty bad ass, it's too bad they rust like it's going out of style...
That lowered green one is definitely titties, my E28 should be sitting about like that by the end of the week! H&Rs just got dropped off!!'88 528e /// '88 M5 /// '89 951 /// '98 E430 /// '02 M5Comment

The door skins are the same, every other body panel is different, brakes are all different, front and rear subframes and suspension pieces are all different. Unfortunately, not much from the E28 aside from the engines and electronics will fit an E12 without a lot of modification. Maybe you are thinking of the link between E12s and early (up to 5/1982) 6 series. Those cars shared everything mechanically, and the suspension and brakes were all the same. It's a damn shame they rust so badly... Things got much better when the E28 rolled in and BMW stopped letting Karman build the E24 chassis. Mine was one of the first E24s built by BMW after they booted Karman for quality control issues, and it still has more rust problems than my E28 (1984 533i) by far. :(I seem to recall that there's a high degree of interchangability between the e12 and e28 5ers.'88 528e /// '88 M5 /// '89 951 /// '98 E430 /// '02 M5Comment

From FirstFives.org...under "What is an e12"
In South Africa, where local E-12 assembly started in 74, E-12 production continued until early 1984 (even though European production ceased in late 81). Thus S.African E-12 cars built after the end of Euro production feature E-28 dashboards, trac-link suspension, double pivot front suspension and other E-28 refinements.Comment

There's the exception then. In general though, most pieces are not interchangeable. At the house we have two E12 chassis E24s and I've had so many good ideas as far as suspension and brake swaps, but they don't work. My 6 has full Alpina suspension, but it's useless on my E28... The front subframes are drastically different, the E12 piece is massive, about the size of a side of a medium sized air conditioner for a house! And iirc, the rear subframe doesn't even use pitman arms. The front suspension used a stabilizer arm mounted to the strut and the front of the subframe, whereas the E28 uses a "push" style control arm for stabilizing the front end, and it's mounted behind the strut. At the rear, the E12 chassis had the diff suspended from the trunk floor and also mounted to the subframe with a couple bolts, but in the E28 the diff is mostly supported by the subframe (if not completely). The front struts are very different the way they bolt to the spindles, and the brake caliper spacing is unique front and rear to the old cars, E28 brakes wont fit without adapters, and E12 brakes wont fit an E28 either (which sucks because E12 based E24s have bitchin 4 piston ATE front calipers and 2 piston rears with vented rotors) I saw a grassroots motorsports article about a guy who put E28 suspension in an old Bavaria, which had similar underpinnings to the E12, so it is definitely possible with some creativity. Thus S.African E-12 cars built after the end of Euro production feature E-28 dashboards, trac-link suspension, double pivot front suspension and other E-28 refinements.
Thats pretty cool that they made the stuff fit though... The old style (E12 and E24) suspensions have very few options for performance springs and whatnot.'88 528e /// '88 M5 /// '89 951 /// '98 E430 /// '02 M5Comment
