photoshop options

I just got a new DSLR and im too cheap to spend another $600 on photshop, what are my options for descent photo editing software? (i have a apple powerbook g4)

I dont need any pro stuff, just would like to touch up my images.

Gimp is an open source graphics program. It's bundled with a lot of linux releases and has a lot of the features real photoshop has. (I don't approve of elements being marketed as anything near useful.) Between $600 and free, I choose free. Or illegal download... just don't make money on it.

One other option, I would consider if I did think I would make money on it. Look for a second hand copy of photoshop 7 or CS or CS2 or something. Unless you're gonna take a class on it, you won't use most of the features anyway, so 7 is as good as CS or CS3 in that case.

meh, I disagree. I recently upgraded from CS2 to CS4, and the difference is HUGE. All the tools work better, the interface is better, all of that 'Auto' functions are much smarter (if you're in to that) and, remember, it's 2 generations better. I would either go with Gimp, PS Elements (believe it or not, there's a lot of features in there) or check your favorite Torrent site for further 'info' ;)

Yeah, but most people probably don't even know the beginning of masking, much less the new tools you speak of. A couple of things I'd be interested in in the later (CS3+?) are the automatic vector generation (forgot the actual name [livetrace?]) and HDR. I learned most of what I know on CS2 and between it and 7.0 that I use, there's not much appreciable difference.

If he's gonna take the time to learn it, yeah, cs3 or cs4 would be better, but loads more costly. For somebody who's just touching photos up, 7.0 or cs are pretty sufficient.

An older version of photoshop would suit a beginner just fine. Specially one on a budget.
