Coming from a m20 2.9lt stroker track car. I can safely say that I'm happy with my choice in using a S50b30Euro motor in out race car.
Yes it might be heavier, but that can be dialed out with suspension and some lightweight body panels (as most know).
The stock motor (well with the exception of Chip, Ally flywheel and exhaust and intake trumpets) should make around 70hp more than my built 2.9lt. It will rev to 8000rpm all day ( I could even spin it to 9200 rpm like the drag guys do but I like my rods where they belong).
For me it's a no brainer. Although I will admit my 2.9 was super reliable and one of the stronger m20's about. I feel the M50/S50 is a better motor in all departments.
In the next couple of months I'm sure you will see how a 3.1lt M20 with ITB's compares with a S50b30Euro As Andreas should be done with his other motor by the time we get out there.

i just saying for him. he shouldnt have to spend a shit load of money to have fun. thats all I would do an m50 swap if i have the time and money, but for right know i still have fun with an

oh and i completely agree with your philosophy don't get me wrong. i'd rather be out there having fun instead of working on the car/swap. i tracked (drifted at redline) a 160k m20 for a year hoping it would blow so that i could swap it and eventually realized i couldn't break it so i had to sell it. its pushing my friend's car now ; /No more e30s for me.

Track Rat = M50 all day long!! They can be had so so cheap if you look hard and wait for that one deal you just can't pass up. I would buy a complete donor car such as a e34. This would be ideal since it has almost everything you need anyway. Part what you don't want or need and make a portion if not all of your money back.sigpic

M50 all day long.
Not only are they super reliable, but they are much easier to work on than the M20. The only time you need special tools is when the vanos is coming off- not exactly the type of thing you're going to need to do at the track.
Throw an aluminum t-stat housing, new water pump, and aluminum radiator in when you do the swap and you'll have a bulletproof track setup.'91 318is
