so just a follow-up a few months later on this comment. I picked up my winter project after taking 3 runs in a late 318is. The M10 is running great but I just can't keep up with the RX7's in my class no matter how well I drive, simply for lack of oomph.

    Lanark Highlands Forest Rally

We finished 8th overall and 1st of the 2wd teams with Martin's Nissan 240SX. We had some fun with this one.

This event is run on an amazing road which was used as a stage in the Canadian 1974 Rideau Lakes Rally, a World Rally Championship event won by Sandro Munari in a Lancia Stratos. Back in those days they ran these roads at night with no stage notes.

We run the same road seven times, 4 times Northbound, and 3 Southbound. Here's our in-car video.

I'm hoping being light will help to offset that for me, at least for a while. Then put something aluminum and 4-cyl with more power in later to make it better :)

WRX is paid off in 2 years, so at that time if I still want more power, I'll just start beating that one up :)

    :-(

I guess we'll see. This season it's my M10 vs. 4 guys driving an Eta vs. 2 guys driving a late e30 318is....

That said, next winter we'll do more power. This winter was suspension/brakes/everything else :)

M10 isn't super-fast, but not sure why everyone dogs them so much. I have a tuned VF52 WRX putting down triple the M10's power, and I still think the M10 car is fun to drive and quick enough - especially with the car in the 2200lb range :)

People these days are just spoiled with power, I think. 2002s with M10s used to kill it in rally back in the day...

also depends on what you are looking to do with the car. Stage rally, then buying a built car is cheaper in the end. if you just want to biff around in a gravel pit, then just a cheap E30, and reinforce it like a madman.

The e30 that someone already built and is selling.
If you wanna go racing, By, dont build.
If you wanna build, buy the cheapest one you can that runs and drives decent. Expensive stuff like internals of motor and trans and diff, etc.
You want to save your money for cage, seat, safety stuff, travel, wheels, tires, etc.
You can drop 10 grand the first day.
