    E36 ABS in e30

I've been thinking about this since I saw a thread on Bimmerforums speaking about ABS.

I'm fairly sure it would be possible to implement a 3 channel e36 ABS into an e30 (that didn't come with ABS).

The only glitch I can see are the ABS rings. For my application the fronts aren't a big issue as I already run e36 stuff up front. It's just the e30 M3 rear.

Where is the ABS ring and sensor on the e30 M3? I can't say I've ever taken note as to where they are to be honest.

Does anyone have the wiring or a how to make the ABS run standalone?

I can also get hold of an e36 328i Group N ABS computer box, or at the worst get a chip from Europe.

The only reason I'm considering running ABS is for the fact of saving tyres. I can threshold brake just fine for the most part. For the instant I don't I don't want to go out and kill a front tyre. They are rather expensive to just chuck away. Especially considering it's a rare size to.

The ABS ring is built into the halfshaft, and the sensor resides in a hole bored into the trailing arm.

I think as a part of the swap, it might be easiest to run Z3 M Roadster rear trailing arms, speed sensors, and Z3 M halfshafts. That way you balance the braking out and you also get identical tone wheels at all four corners.

Do the non ABS cars also have this hole?

My trailing arms came from an 325i non abs and they have had a load of work done to them.

So I would rather not change them, and there is also the fact that we never got the M z3 and the M Coupe parts are incredibly hard to come by here.

Is that the hole that you are talking about there just below where the half shaft goes through the bearing?

EARLY 318's and 325e's [83/84] have a boss for the hole, but no hole. pretty easy to find trailing arms tho

Seems like my arms don't have them, there isn't even a provision for them. The extra shielding that would go around the abs ring (on the trailing arm) appears to be missing.

I will see if I can get some ABS half shafts and if they fit my arms then I can just fab a bracket to mount on the arm for the ABS sensor.

I will be doing this in a few months, Im currently running a full 98 M3 harness. And the last step is the ABS pump. Im using 98 M3 front and TI rear. Fortunately i do have the correct ABS rings, I just have to get around to "plumbing" the pump
