Steering rack ratio diff between 88 and 91?

    E30 Racing Gurus,

I'm building/having built an '88 325is into a rally car (www.slapdashracing.com), but the steering rack has that typical city bus ratio.

I also have a '91 325i parts car. Does anyone know if that later car has a quicker ratio than the '88? And if so, are they swappable? The '88 is far away from me at the moment, so I can't test.

    Cheers

        SlapDash, check this steering-ratio video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcdclE3XAmg

I would consider this ^ route, it's been running great on mine.

How the hell did you get that to fit? .75 lock to lock eh? I really don't think that would be safe, one sneeze and you're two lanes over on the freeway.

i think its 1.5 lock to lock right? ive seen drifters spin the wheel and if you had .75 you wouldnt even need to flick the wheel.

Thanks Gesucht! Looks like a pretty sweet system. Is/was it pricey?

                Brand : Howe
                Cost about ~$150 - $200 new.

You can choose 1.5:1 or 2.0:1
If you have steady hands, you can DIY with a decent welder at home.
More step-by-step professional info available for free somewhere online.

It has been done many times, and it's race proven.

It's just not publicized that much, because those enthusiast BMW parts seller can't make more $$$$ out of their "unique", "rare", "almighty" overprices M3 parts, etc!

Nice! That price seems doable. It would be nice to turn the wheel and actually have the car turn as a result. What might have been good for the Autobahn, not so good for the woods.

Thanks again for the info. I'll start researching.

And my car won't get much freeway use once it's done, so no worries on the sneeze factor.
