S14.
M20, too expensive, not good return on investment.
M50/52, lower end price due to more parts, still not all that great.
If you want stupid high revs and power, 2.5L Alpha/n S14 is the way to go.

Do you know what class you plan on racing?
Have you checked SCCA rules or e30 spec rules?
Because some of the things you want and in the chassis you want to use you are going to be going against cars that would still kill you.
Now if your building a drift car no worries, but the second you do a motor swap your going to be racing cars that have far superior chassis and suspensions.
I'm not trying to kill your dreams or say you couldn't compete with other cars.
Otherwise, people on this forum really enjoy non-vanos m50's or regular m50's with s50 cams, neither of those can handle 7+k rpms but both pull hard with right tranny and ecu hardware.

High revving and hydraulic lifters don't go hand in hand. If you want sustained 7k+ solid lifters will be a good idea. VAC sells 'em for m/s5x. Or get a euro s50b30 or b32.

If it's going in a completely customizable frame and you want a sustainable high revving engine why are you stuck on a BMW 2.5?
PS: the m52 is a 2.8
Sorry, I can't be f more help.

Best n/a 2.5L build possible?
Hey everyone,
Just joined this. Im looking for the best possible n/a 2.5L build for a race engine. Cant decide if i should go with the m50/tu or m52/tu, although im steering towards the m50 due to the OBDI being easier to work with? Looking for a sustainable high revving engine (anywhere above 7k is good though). I am planning to upgrade the engine as much as possible, so another factor for example is possible cams made for the engine. Will the VANOS affect the selection of cams? What is the wildest cam out there for a bmw 2.5L? Any advice is extremely welcome. Im hoping to put it in a completely custom built frame for a track toy. Thanks again.
