My only suggestion would be to go with something more durable if you aren't trying to win trophies.
I bet you could get ALOT od DE's out of a set of Toyo R888s, which would save more in the long run than free mounting/balancing of one set.
word. I'm getting an easy 2 spring/summer/fall *street* driving seasons plus several HPDE's and misc. autox out of mine. I've had regular street tires that didn't last half as long while being half as sticky.
$120 a tire is damn cheap! Hoosiers are like crack though, I definitely want another set of A6s..
I have a set of the 15x8. they are great. They are light. I dont think the wheels actually differ in weight between the colors. I run mine on the track so I have 225/45-15 NT-01's. but I plan on getting a set for the street and running the Hankook RS-3. they offer a 225/45-15 and I think it is around $100 a tire. these are supposed to be great all around tires. Grassroots just did a write up of the latest autox street tires. they pitted these againt the Kumho XS, Dunlop Direzza star spec, and Azenis. they tested them all on an autocross and thetrack. the RS-3 has good results for all. The RS-3 you can get from Tirerack as well. I bet you can get a deal on the wheel tire package. Good luck. Also the 15x8 fit with no spacers and I have no clearance issues, however be careful if you have a late model as the rear wheel arches are lower. you could have contact there.
Here's my advice:
Don't bother buying new race tires unless you are racing or going for lap records. Find a local racer who runs your size tire. Most racer will get rid of their tires with plenty of life left.
I run 225/45/15 hoosiers and have never payed more than $100 for a set. You can run them to the cords and they are still very very fast. If there is any wear indicator left on the tread at all you should be able to get 3 track days out of them.
I'd have a hard time buying new toyo's knowing that I could be going a few seconds per lap faster on a set of freebie hoosiers!
Walmart charges like $7.50 to mount a tire (no balancing needed in my experience) so changing tires a few times in the season doesnt seem like a big deal to me.
I don't know anyone giving away good tires for that price. I check local/regional forums, craigs list, ebay, etc... all the time looking for good deals. $100 for a set of 4 Hoosiers in that size is something I have never seen. If you can point me to a set for that price, I will by 4-5 sets right now. Even z214's, R1's, etc...
