PIR Track Day yesterday in Portland was a BLAST!!! (long)

The BMWACA Club hosted it. Sold out to a limit of 85 drivers by Tuesday. Makes for more room in each group = more open track to play! I ran in the advanced group in Evan's M Technic with a bunch of very fast Porsches. One of the newer ones, a silver beast caught me at the end of the front straight and I waved him by on the back straight to pass me, which he did. We came flying up to the braking area for the esses and I said to myself, DAMN he is taking that way faster than I am. And, that is one of the fastest parts of the track for my driving. He made the first left S okay, but carried too much speed to make the right one and went straight off into the wet grass. I have a ring side view of this. I knew it was going to end bad, because he wasn't slowing down at all. Just before contacting the tire wall, he jerked the wheel right and the car pitched at an angle and WHAMMO! Jumped in the air and bounced off. I was braking as best as I could and headed down the escape road. I was just about to unbuckle and run over to see how he was and he backed off the tires and drove to the pits. Big mistake! The head guy Sean was very upset because the driver didn't wait for clearance from the ambulance crew and safety crew and spilled coolant along the way to the pits. I have a pic and will try and post it later. Not a good day for silver cars. Just before lunch, an M coupe ate concrete on the back straight. It is treacherous when damp. Oil oozes up through the pavement when it rains and it was sprinkling. I have a pic of that one too. Other than that, the day was a blast. Evan moved up to intermediate group and began to wail on a bunch of e46 M3s, e36s and a silver e30 M3. The driving chairman had a second meeting after lunch and gave a great quote. " If a meteor falls on your car, that is an accident. Everything else is driver error" I love that line! There were a bunch of e30s running. Nice group of drivers, too. A 318is impressed a lot of people. Just as I was about to drive off in the tow rig, the driver of the e30 mM3 came up to me and said. I gotta ask you this. What the hell do you have under that hood? I told him " You really don't want to know because you will feel bad" He said to tell him anyway. I said it is a $700. junkyard m50 that is stock. His jaw dropped and he said OHHH! Evan had been chasing him down in the very last session and passed him on the last lap of the day. Way cool! The e30 platform is awesome for making very fun track cars from. Can't wait for the next one. Now I gotta find some new tires

Yeah, it hurts to look at that car. Kind of like Mot's wreck, just add a zero to $3,000 and it is good to go! I am salivating about the next track day already !
