    Engine and Transmission Mounts

My 24V swapped car has been doing great for about 2 years of street driving with green e28 engine mounts and e21 transmission mounts. Last weekend was my car's first HPDE and it did very well! However, through an "S" section of the track, I could see out of the corner of my eye, the shifter was shifting back and forth a good 3-4"!! I haven't been under the car to see if any mounts are shot, but either way, that movement is not cool.

I ordered some of Silence's solid mounts to stiffen things up, I just hope the vibration is not unbearable. My car doesn't see much street use these days, but I'd still like it to be streetable.

Any experiences here with similar "solid" mounts??

    thanks

Yes. I made solid motor, trans, and (rear) subframe bushings, and delrin TABs. I feel EVERYTHING, no complaints. You'll find that straight-sixes run really smooth; they really are something special. I used a chunk of radiator hose as a minimal pad between the trans and mounts so any chassis flex didn't pop off the trans ears.

I'm using Silence's motor mounts and I have no complaints. There's an increase in NVH but the car's DD'd. I heard the NVH goes up quite a bit with BOTH the motor and trans mounts. But I still don't imagine it would be a big deal...

I never heard of that abbreviation. Thanks

I was able to check out my rubber mounts and they seem to be absolutely fine. I'm not sure why they would allow so much movement of my shifter.

I've got Silence's engine and tranny mounts in hand now. I'm thinking of just doing the solid tranny mounts and keeping the e28 green mounts on the engine.

Hopefully I can reduce driveline movement while maintaining a pretty comfortable ride.

I'm not really sure what Silence makes his mounts out of or how soft they are, but I've driven a few e30's with solid aluminum mounts on both the engine and trans. No way would that ever be streetable, at least not for me. The M20 is a pretty darn smooth engine, but the frame basically acts like a giant resonator and it gets pretty loud in car, especially at low revs when the power pulses are a little further apart.

I have silence engine/trans and rear diff mounts. I'm actually going to upgrade to solid aluminum engine/trans mounts. I will notify you to loctite the bolts when you install them. After a month go back in and tighten then back up (just to make sure). Once they break-in the are super compliant and totally bearable on the street.

ive done my whole car with OE rubber (m3 cabs, mz3 diff, e36 hd strut tops) e.t.c. anyway, what is the rule with motor/trans mounts. i remember its the tran s mounts have to be stiffer or vice versa.

But yeah ive got green rein e21 mounts and they are shit.

i don't know why, but the AL mounts on my car are totally DDvable. i have OE rubber tranny mounts and there is no vibration no cabin resonance or anything and my car is fully gutted, like nothing not even sunroof frame sound deadening or nothing. They are sure hold your motor in place forever.

I suggest the front subframe AKG $30 refinforcement kit.
                      No more e30s for me.
