    Helmets

What should I look for in a good driving helmet? It seems that I need a Snell SA2010 rated helmet, but what else is there to the equation? Also where can I find a store that stocks them? All I can find are motorcycle helmets that don't have the SA rating.

I'm in the bay area if anyone has a lead on a store that carries SA helmets that would be great.

If you have the extra cash, a lighter helmet is really nice to have. Kevlar/CF vs. Fiberglass. Otherwise just find one that fits right and has a few vents. If all you're doing is auto-x, you could look into an open-faced helmet. Anything wheel-2-wheel, full-face is the way to go.

if you don't club race, just de or auto-x its more than likely that sa2005 helmets will be good for another 4-5 years. i'm still rocking my sa2005.

got my helmet seat and harness from saferacer.com

cool to see SF people, i moving to san carlos soon. i'll be in SF since thursday to sign my new job and then i'll spend the rest of friday sat and sunday looking at places! i'm trying to figure out what's a good area to live between SF and san carlos and then i have to figure out what i'm going to do with the e30 track car.. i bet registration is going to be a pita for my s52 swap.
        No more e30s for me.

          Cool more bay area people.

Registration is fine, just smog it. Getting my MR2 BAR'd after the engine swap was actually very easy. If it's OBD2 they might hook up a computer, if not they just poke around and look for shiny things.

mr2: There isn't one brand of helmets that are best. All just meet the minimum ratings to receive either a DOT or SNELL rating. It's best to buy a helmet from a local shop becuase you want to put it on and leave it on for a good 10 minutes to make sure it still feels OK after wearing it for a while. 30 seconds is not enough of a test fit. The helmet should be snug but not so difficult to put on that it hurts. Loose is not good either.

I like white over black because if the helmet sits out in the sun on a hot day, when you go to put it on, it has not heated up if it is white. Black will heat up, or just keep it stored out of the sun.

^^ i agree with what he's saying. i actually had worn the helmet from a track event before buying it... they normally fit well.

as for the BAR.. you have to consider i come from a state without emissions i have no cats, charcoal cannister non-working cel or the obd2 valve.. i have some parts sourcing to do before i leave and an exhaust to piece together. i'm going to tell them its a obd1 though so it just gets smogged. hopefully i'll be out there in a month or so!

I wear a Simpson (www.TeamSimpson.com) Speedway Shark. It's very comfortable. If you have a budget, Simpson has the "V-Sport" full face, SA2005 helmet for around $250.

Do certain classes require that the helmet be full-face?

I am currently looking for a helmet and I found a Snell sa2010 open face helmet I like but I don't want to buy a helmet that isn't allowed on some tracks.

All I'm going to be doing is auto-x and DE anyway maybe I'll be fine with just sa2005.

If you looking for a decent, cheap, full face the HJC CL line is a good choice. I have a CL15 (Now discontinued) along with quite a few other people I know.

The Bell Sport is what I have. Great price point and it's still a Bell. Certainly not light but I'm not an endurance racer or anything.
                              just doin track stuff :-P
