Let's Brainstorm: Need ideas for BMW competition/shootout

    Guys,

The Owner of Extreme Speed Track events (www.extremespeedtrackevents.com) has approached me with the idea of starting a BMW competition/shootout at various tracks starting this season. The first one is planned to be on June 12 at Willow Springs, Big Willow track.

We are trying to grow the BMW presence and create a simple structure of classes to compete in. So I need ideas from you experienced drivers/competitors. Lets try to keep it as simple as possible.

What would define street or modified classes?
How would the different series of BMWs be classified? By engine, NA/turbo or by chassis?

There may be other associations out there that have similar challenges but we would like to come up with a challenge also. So any way to make this challenge different is possible would be beneficial

Any of you interested in possibly entering this challenge?

Also, here is the link to the next track event at Streets of Willow on May 15th. There is also a discount code. Lets take over! Click here

I look forward to your responses.

Well there are s2k challenges and wrx/evo challenges. Most of those guys are run through speed ventures or redline. All the BMW guys run in NASA is what I found out. And Nasa has their own leagues spece30/GTS etc. And of course there is BMW CCA which presence on the west coast isn't nearly as great as the east coast. So how to add another group into all that?

I had an idea for an M3 challenge. The e36 m3 is super cheap and dominates the tracks out here. For whatever reason there isn't a specM3 class really (something going on in CO with UUC) but other than that I think socal would benefit from something like that. Lots of guys with M3's out here. Otherwise you could have a class for like swapped e30s and stuff too. What makes the challenges with the s2k's, miatas and evo/wrx easy is that it is a class of one type of car. While there is basically e30/e36/and e46 there is more than one way to break those up so it's not as simple, that's why the only M3 idea.

If you want to throw everyone in the same class ie street, modified, ulimate, unlimited etc then you can just copy most of whatever redline has setup already. I'm not a huge fan of those classes because who really plays by the rules and who cheats? NASA and BMWCCA has more strict inspections or overall honest people.

Not sure if there is an answer in there, just brainstorming.

I'm about 2yrs from having the freedom to do something like this coming from Phx to Cali..
I like NASA TT in my car since it gives me a shot w. the other BMW chassis and other makes. Pretty convoluted for most though.
I think your best results would be an all makes welcome, power to weight and wheel/tire size "shootout" for mostly fun, maybe some cash!
Try to hook up w. those who are already up and running these types of events. S2k, wrx, miata, etc..

I appreciate the input. well I think the idea would be to start something small and grow it. This is our chance to put in our input and structure an event and hopefully make it simpler yet still fun even for the slower driver.

Yes, this challenge is intended to be a fun, light hearted event. Not a serious racing challenge, at least not yet....

This challenge will be offered at different Socal racetracks

Yeah, maybe it would be a All BMW challenge based on general power to weight?

I think PTW and Tires are the biggest contributors.. This separates the gutted racer from the daily driver and the race gas guzzling beast from the stock motor, plus it's hard to run against a guy on 335 Hoosiers w. your 205 street tires! lol Maybe novice/pro as well?
I like the idea and being in SoCal you should be able to get it going.

yeah, It would have to be different experiance classes. And I do like that you are keeping it simple based on the tire and car set up. But we wouldnt know how to classify everyone prior to the event and it could delay track time.

Help me figure this out so we can get more seat time! I love trying to save as much money as I can while getting as much track time as possible.

Full interior vs. Stripped.. This would probably separate a lot of the hardcore track guys from the casuals.
You can get a car weighed at a lot of places even if they're not race scales. Weigh stations, dumps.
HP would have to be est. and on the honor system.
Tire/Wheel sizes and tire types wouldn't be too hard, just need a cut off. I'd say 235 since most guys run 205/215/225 on 15" and 235 is a smaller 17" common width.
255 width tires means you're pretty serious.. and the E36's will be running these at the least.
R-comp and street tire, 140 tread wear is common in designating criteria in AutoX.
It won't be easy and you can't make all the people happy all the time! :p
