Thoughts on removing numbers after track day?

    Simple question:

Do you, or would you, remove your assigned HPDE number from your car before leaving the track? And why?

In a combination of forgetfulness and laziness, I have yet to remove mine. I've found that people use it as a conversation starter when they see it. I've talked more about my E30 in the last month than I have in the last year (r3v doesn't count).

So far, I seem to be experiencing the positives. Any negatives? Has anyone been given more crap from a cop because of it? Anyone had a cop claim that it was obstructing vision? Do the experienced believe people that leave their numbers on are nooblets? :)

I take mine off every time, no particular reason. Last time I left them on the glue got literally melted on the window from the sun and took me an hour to rub it off with nail polish remover.

Back in the days I was doing DE's in a daily driver I usually removed the numbers before leaving the track. The longer they are on the car the harder they are to get off.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Certainly it took me near forever to get the inspection sticker glue off. I hadn't considered the chemical changes the sticker/glue might be experiencing with time and sun.

        No other ill effects though?

I use magnetic numbers but take them off after the event to avoid looking like a fast and furious retard.

That movie ruined the idea of driving anything resembling a competition car on the streets.

You must have a pretty car ;-)
Mine is a dented bucket with only half its paint. It looked like a junker until I saw the numbers on it, and thought to myself "hey, it looks like a track rat now".

But I don't want to look like an asshat
            Maybe I'll take them off.

The beater car with numbers lumps you in with the broke ass baggy pants, unpainted body kit import crowd. People who know performance cars will recognize you with numbers on the side or not. Everyone else will think you're a poser. Just my opinion.

I take them off because I don't want to be easily identified by the law enforcement. Makes you a target as well.

And I don't want to be confused with that crowd :)

I think y'all have convinced me to remove the numbers. But...
We are talking about an E30 track rat, right? People who know track cars might know without numbers. In my limited experience most people that know "performance cars" are the ones don't know what a budget track car is.

Also, there are far more DD E30's out there than track rats. My car would look like, and statistically fall into, a beat up sedan unless you could recognize the Team Dynamics wheels. That's the only part of my car that looks "odd" from the outside. I've done nothing flashy for this car, only safety and bits of fun :)

But, I don't like sticky crap on my windshield, so off it goes.

Everyone else will think you're a poser. Just my opinion.
I've never seen numbers on cars until I went to my first HPDE. Maybe it's just the area I live in. Everyone around here tries to be a "street racer", not a trained and practiced track driver.

Are you are talking about the numbers they give you for the front glass? If I remembered I would remove them, if not oh well. NASA requires you have the number on the doors, so If I was driving my car to the track I'd use magnets so I could easily remove them. A strip of tape on the leading edge of the magnet will ensure it does not fly off at speed.

A couple years ago I had to drive my Spec E30 4 hours home when my brother's car blew an engine and took my cars place on the trailer. It looked just like it does in my sig(car on right). I put my brother's tag on it and crossed my fingers. Race seat, race exhaust, no windows in February, no heat = worst 4 hours ever!!!

Leaving the numbers on your car to get attention is the equivalent of bringing a super car to the track and parking it in every corner. No one will like you.
Its fuh raze, ricey and just plain stupid.
Leaving the numbers on your car because you are a GD lazy son of a bitch, you will need a discovery parts sticker somewhere else on the car to make that alright :)
