IMHO, they need a 3SGE motorswap and/or boost to make them fun on the track. My bro has an AE86 with a JDM hi-comp and its still slow....but I love the styling95 7.1L 16V E36 M3

This one was not turbo, and was not slow...it was faster than BSP corvettes, ASP viper, CSP miatas.... IIRC it posted top time of the day scratch time, minus one cone. I don't remember what engine is in it, but some kind of 4cyl swap.Mtech1 v8 build thread - https://www.r3vlimited.com/board/sho...d.php?t=413205

i to would enjoy having a 80's RWD toyota, they are great!
engine is probably dual cam 16 valve, whatever it is.Comment

Hey now, Lot of R3v members own MR2's. They are crazy fun and cheap. The Mk1 is a classic 80's japanese styling. My favorite of the three. Toyota lost it's way with awesome cars after the last Supra. Hopefully one day they will redeem themselves.sigpicComment

Purpose built car with many years of tweaking to it. Hence why it's quick, owner has focused on Auto-X/Solo II.Comment

Almost certainly a 4ag swap, they used those engines forever in formula atlantic. Not to bad for an engine designed in 1982,1600cc and 240hp NA.
Old toyotas are so much better than anything recent,I built an AE86 for autox/track days etc.Pretty sure it was the only full composite bodied corolla in the world with a carb'd AND turbo'd engine.Comment

that is not nearly stock by any means hence why it is so awesome.
i had an 85 corolla GTS (ie. ae86 - like the panda hatch pictured right after). there's a reason i drive e30's now. solid axles... lmao.. what a joke. bet you that starlet doesnt have it anymore.
i do have to admit. it was a lot of fun to drive. probably more so than my e30.. it just can't do half what my first, stock e30 could do. now modded holy crap.. never in that 86's life.. So take it from personal experience, the e30 is a badass bang for your buck.No more e30s for me.

I'll take that bet,for sure the starlet is still live axle. And I agree,it comprises many areas of the car BUT its part of what made it the cult classic it is.I converted my car to an equal lenght 3 bar, custom adjustable panhard mounts on both chassis and axle to relocate(lower)the roll center by nearly 6" and full heim joints to elimanate the bushing bind.
With those changes(and lots more)it was the car to beat in my region.Comment
