You're not going to harm the tires by driving a few miles to the track or an AX meet. They're DOT street tires, remember--they were designed to be able to be run on the street, legally. Being able to get up and drive an already-prepared car will probably do more for your lap times than the miniscule wear you're putting on the tire by getting to the track.
A bigger factor is usually heat cycles, and you shouldn't be heat cycling the tires on the way to the track, so long as you're not drifting or doing burnouts or anything.

wouldn't a truck/trailer cost far more than the miniscule amount of wear you'd get driving to the event? unless you've got 40-treadwear Hoosiers, you're not going to hurt the R888s driving 50 miles on the street..

Usually put my v710s in the back seat, but sometimes I've driven on them to/from events about 50 miles away.

I'm facing the same decision this year,I've decided to get a set of dedicated track tires/wheels to run PR and the Ridge, but I also haul all of the clubs registration stuff to and from the track as well as my own junk so I dont have room for another set of tires.
My solution is to take 2 vehicles and start looking for a car trailer. We bought the car to to track it,street driving is secondary to that for us.
See you at the track!

Hey Joe -- we met at one of the PR days in december, I think.
IMO it all depends on how far you're going, risk tolerance and how motivated you are to eke out the last bit of performance from your tires.
When I lived in Boston, I was often driving 1.5 to 8 hours to get to the track. In that case, I would pretty much always swap tires or trailer the car.
Now, living in Seattle, I'm 40 minutes from pacific raceways; and I really like being able to wake up in the morning in my bed, stop for a latte and drive to the track without ever having to change tires.
Of course, as your track tires get low on tread, you'll want to be careful in the rain; and police may not look kindly to tires below the legal wear limit.
my two cents.

I have R888s, drove them once to an autocross and probably wouldn't do it for every event but wouldn't hesitate to do it once or twice. Now what I do is stuff two in the trunk and two in the back seat... thinking about making something for my roof racks that'll hold them.

I've done it all ways:
Run street tires to and on track
Run r-comps to and on track
Run street tires to track an r-comps on track
The last option is best
