    ChumpCar time!!!! MIS Aug 25-26

Schaut Speed Racing is at it again with the Bavarian Mustache Werks!

This time, we will be running a dual 7-hour race weekend at Michigan International Speedway!!!! woot woot! High banks of MIS! I think there are going to be 5 or 6 E30s out there. Should be a good time.

I encourage anyone who's close enough to come out and watch the action!

Lot of work was done since the clutch issues at Road America, and hopefully the work will pay off with a reliable car that can make the entire 7 hours each day!

Work done included 3-discing the diff, oil pan baffle/scraper, clearancing/shielding the lower rad hose, all new clutch components (master/slave/PP/disc), did away with the wheel studs that liked to back out during the race (loctite, why no you work???) and improved the hood mount.

Here's Thelma with her new hood - new hood pin location and adding the headlamp surrounds back in should help with preventign teh hood from flying off again...

And a pic of the finished hood; she's been 'stached!!!

of course its racist! its a race car! LOL!

      Results were awesome and craptastic.

I drove the first stint on Saturday, working my way through almost the entire field (started something like 22nd or so out of ~30), pitted for first driver change/fuel stop from 1st place. Rest of drivers kept clean and ran solid laps. Team ended up having 2 drive-through penalties (Apparently its easy to miss turn 1?) and some mis-timed pit stops (read, under green instead of full course caution), but we came home in 2nd place! woot woot! Trophy is awesome!

Sunday, we reversed driver order. 1st driver ran very well, working our way up to the top 5. Next driver ran awesome - consistent fast laps, and chased down places 2-4. 1st place was basically gone (running a full second per lap faster than anyone else). After the 3rd driver changes/pit stops were all done, we were sitting in 2nd place! Catching the 1st place car may have been possible, but we were looking at another strong finish.

And then the clutch blew up. FML. Our day was done.

At least we got one hell of a sweet trophy from Saturday!

Only thing that wasn't new with the clutch system was the trans (master, slave, lines, flywheel, pilot, PP, disk, TOB - all new), so that is getting replaced before Road America in October.

W - no, but I did run a rebuilt 3-disc (used discs/plates) unit that worked flawlessly throughout the weekend. Much better lock-up characteristics than the worn 2-disc setup we ran earlier this year.

For some reason, The unit with the new x3 2.1mm discs didn't reassemble correctly - Once installed in the case, with the side bearings installed and torqued, the diff would not turn. I even tried multiple combinations of spacer plates - backlash somehow changed and I'm not positive on why. The only thing I can think of is one of the bearings moved position while I was messing around pulling the stripped out allen head bolts.... That or using 3 2.1 mm plates and fresh discs is too much pre-load and is pushing the endcap out a bit.

check with feeler gauge under the top cap and see if you have a gap different than a non-altered unit (no gap). if the stack is too tall inside the capsule the top cap will not seat all the way down. Sometimes internals can not settle either and cause binding / too tall a stack.

you can double check if the stack is extended too much by stacking two shims on the left side and seeing if this helps get closer to proper backlash/spacing
