Can motorcycle helmets be used for auto-x?

Just wanted to know if motorcycle helmets could be used for auto-x, like the full-face crotch rocket ones, or half-face ones, not those black skullcaps like the Harley guys wear. Does anyone know? I only ask because all the pawn shops around here have shitloads of motorcycle helmets, and they're always dirt cheap.

What's wrong with a motorcycle helmet? As long as it hasn't been crashed, is fairly new, and carries the necessary safety ratings, it's ok in my book.

M-rated helmets are not designed for use in closed cockpit applications. multiple impact on multiple points, plus fire-resistant materials. that's why SA's cost more.

I'm just wondering is all, not saying I'm going to buy one. I never see any auomotive helmets anywhere, and I just thought that if they were the same, I could use it and save myself some touble and money, that's all. If it's not something I should use, I won't use it.

josh i'd just get an automobile specific helmet. There is also a rating system and you have to stay current. There is a new rating this year i think, and if you buy a helmet it should be good for several years. I found a nice OMP one for under $400. Its a lot of money, but it is your safety. I think you can get one for under 250... on the other end, my girlfriends dad has a Carbon Fiber helmet with vents and some custom head fitment stuff that cost $1400.00... i never knew helmets could get that nuts in price

It's autocross, get a cheapie motorcycle helmet if you don't plan on doing DE's or any other on track stuff.

If I wasn't running on track stuff, I'd have a cheap open face just for comfort. I may still pick up a cheapie open face snell 00 model to complement my Snell 05 Bell M3.

if you wanna snap a deal, pick up a SA2000 on closeout. since the '05s came out, you'll find a deal, and they're still perfectly good for another 5 years (which is usually about how long you wanna keep a helmet in service, anyway). shit, i've seen closeout '00s openface for around 100 bucks.

I got my SA2000 one in August or Septmeber, right before the 2005s came out. Shipped to my door, like $130.

And I went to a shop beforehand and tried some on before I chose it. Get one that is comfortable.
