NASA autoX @ VIR Sat 2/18/06

NASA's Mid-Atlantic '06 Autocross Championship begins with a time trial/autocross for double points on the 1.1 mile "Patriot Course" at Virginia International Raceway outside Danville, VA on Saturday February 18, 2006.

This event only has ~60 slots open and you can sign up for a single heat (6-8 timed/scored runs) plus an optional additional heat (6-8 timed fun runs.) There will be NO WORK ASSIGNMENTS (NASA is hiring pro cornerworkers/cone shaggers for this event.) Entry fees start at $50 and go up... the longer you wait to sign up.

When you're not autocrossing, you can watch US DRIFT on the Patriot Course as well as a traditional NASA HPDE (driver's ed) and NASA sprint/enduro roadracing on the 3.3 mile full course. Touring laps behind a pace car on the big track will be available during our lunch break for only $10 per car.

Details, pre-registration, Patriot Course maps, videos, and soforth are here:

We hope to see more BMWs in action! ;-)

    Thanks and happy holidays,

    Jon

This will be my 4th? or 5th? consecutive VIR February visit and we've not yet had snow or ice. It's been pretty cold once or twice, rainy once or twice, but never snowy/icy (the track would postpone/raincheck us if so, and we would issue full credits to anyone who couldn't make the later date.)

That cold in April... what year? I'm only ~120 miles NE of VIR... then again I also can't remember snow before Xmas in many moons, and we got some last week, so who knows... ;-)

      Thanks,

      Jon

That's crazy, not normal weather so late around here. But if it happened again, we'd make sure people either made it to the rescheduled date or got a credit for a later event.

PS- I know the feeling... couldn't remember if this was my 4th or 5th Feb weekend at VIR, etc... they do sorta run together after a while ;-)

          Thanks,

We don't yet know if they'll be charging $ at the gate or if you just show up and sign the waiver. Either way you can most likely get in no problem. Worst-case just email me in advance and I'll get you on the "approved entry list" at the gate.

I'll post the spectator policy as soon as we have it (the VIR contract hasn't arrived yet.) Hit me up privately like 2-3 weeks before the event if you're definitely planning to be there.

                  Thanks,

                  Jon

As a spectator? Full access to the grounds, paddock, and everything but the hot pits and track surfaces, to see:

                          1) NASA high performance driver's school on the 3.3 mile full course (groups of 40+ cars at a time, varying skill levels and speeds, but some serious machinery I'm sure, usually everything from Saturns to Ferraris.)

                          2) NASA roadracing on the 3.3 mile full course (groups of 40+ racecars at a time, everything from Miatas to Porsche 911 Cup cars, doing qualifying and sprints on Saturday plus a 3-hour enduro on Sunday.)

                          3) NASA autocross on the 1.1 mile infield Patriot Course, one car at a time against the clock, entry list is at http://www.get-fast.net/nasacross/21806

                          4) US DRIFT on the 1.1 mile infield Patriot Course, one car at a time sliding around for practice, mostly AE86 Corollas and turbo 240SX's.

As a participant? Sign the waiver and borrow a helmet and you can beg for rides with any solo-approved (i.e. not being instructed) non-racing driver on the main track and anybody on the little track all weekend. You can also do touring laps on the 3.3 mile full course behind a pace car (Saturday lunchtime for sure, Sunday TBA.)

Basically picture 300+ cool cars hauling ass around a world class road course facility all weekend and you'll get the idea. ;-)

                          See ya there-

Looks like the entry policy is gonna be "everybody's welcome, just show up and sign the waiver at the gate." So come on out and see what's up, reasonable estimates put the total at around 400 cars between full course HPDE/roadracing, autocross, and drifting...
