Any experience with 245/35/17s up front?

I'm currently running a 225/45/16 R1R up front on a 16x9 ET15 with 10mm spacer. No rubbing issues, works well. I recently upgraded to Tii RX7 calipers and now my wheels dont fit unless I run a huge spacer.

So Im thinking about just upgrading to a bigger wheel and running a lower sidewall. Ill be getting the SLR kit soon as well so the front track will be at least 50mm wider up front. My question is, would a 35 series tire still get decent grip with such a small sidewall? The car is about 2800lbs with me in it. I don't want to sacrifice grip, but I think stepping up to 17s is a good idea for tire selection. Plus I want to take advantage of the Kenda tire program and run 245/40/17 in the back.

Does anyone have any experience they could share?
    Thanks

You'll have much, much better tire selection if you stick with 235/40/17. That's a standard size and just about every high-performance summer tire and R-cmp is available in that size.

245/35/17 is a real oddball size. You have basically zero selection.

Personally I wouldn't run a 17" wheel for a track set up. I think 15's or 16's are ideal (less rotating mass, etc). The tire selection isn't great, but how much tire do you need? I run 225/45/15's with slicks, M50 swap and have a good amount of traction...doesn't break free in the corners. Probably wouldn't notice the difference using a 235.

I bet you could get a better fitting BBK (Massive, UUC, Wilwood, etc) for less money than changing wheel/tire package.

I am using 205/50/15 on 15x8. Works okay, but about .5 sec off on a 60 sec course than my friend using 235/40/17 on 17x9.

I would use 235/40/17 if I can find some good 17x9 rims.

Or you could buy 225/45 or 50 series 15's for the 8" and save some weight.

Had 225/45/15 R1R before, not as fast as 205/50/15 Kumho XS or the cheap Federal 595RSR. All mounted to the same 15x8 wheel.

Would you say that was due to a compound change or the sidewall thickness?

I run 255/40/17 on all 4 corners. Feels great with the s52, but when i just had the m50, it was noticeable weight difference from my 245/45/16. I love the selection of 255's on a 17" wheel though. If you're going with 17's, you should stick with 245/40. It'll be hard to find tires in a 35 sidewall.

There is the same exact tire Im running now in a 245/35/17 but seems that 17s are just too big for track use.

Believe 205 tire on 8" had better side wall support.

225 R1R had 8.3" tread width and 8.9" section width. Should work much better on 9" wheels.

What did you have to do to get those to fit? Or 245's for that matter. With rolled rears I don't rub my 235's, but don't think I can fit much more.

Looks a little pricey. I'll stick with my federals. Cheaper, more sizes, lower tread wear rating.

255/40/17 (run like 275s) on 17x10 et 3. 235/40s up front on RC090s with 12mm spacers. I'm running the IE 310mm 6 piston kit and only need a 5mm spcacer.

                          ^Beefy!!

Yea you can tuck 245/45/16's on an 8" wheel. I decided to have fun with a grinder though lol:

                          That's on a 16x9 et0 (before the fenders)

And these are the 17x9.75 et5, i think with 245/40's at the time
