    ABS Delete - mechanical ABS Installation

    Anybody delete their ABS in favor of a lock-resistant brake system?
    I've seen a couple stock cars in various forms of racing use similar systems,
    I want to hunt down a shock accumulator to absorb the brake-stab and gradually release the pressure. I can't remember the last time I ever activated ABS on a car and I may have locked my brakes once, and it was a result of jumping on the brakes.



    Seems like they sell some of the parts required, but I'd have to investigate more. Anybody have experience with this?

    While not up to the performance of later four-channel ABS systems, I doubt that anything you could to to an E30's brakes are going to always be better than what the car came with.
    The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

      You know the E30 comes with a system very similar to that from the factory, right?

        E46 M3 seams to be the ABS upgrade of choice.

          the e30 bias valve cuts pressure to the rears though; as i understand it, pressure increases linearly in both front and rear lines until a pressure threshold it reached, where the bias valve then scales back the rear pressure. as a result, under full braking force, the e30's F/R bias is something like 70/30 (generalization) due to the bias valve.


          in practice, it seems like six in one, half dozen in the other.. so i dunno if this 'upgrade' is worth it.

            Eric, I'm reading about the E46 M3 system retrofit. If I'm understanding it correctly, it just requires the following:

            ABS unit
            1 yaw sensor (listed as speed sensor in realOEM)
            4 wheel speed sensors (listed as pulse generators)
            2 pressure sensors
            4 brake lines (LF, RF, LR, RR)
            and the proper wiring and installation of all components


            this is interesting. can it effectively act as a 'standalone', needing no interface with the DME, maybe just tying in to quiet the ABS warning light?


            also, from what i can discern, regular e46's came with 4-channel ABS. is the only difference as compared to the M3 system found in the pump (and perhaps ABS software)?

                  Based on that post, sounds nothing alike, the first post shows a mechanically pressure-dampening valve setup.
                  Isn't the ABS from an e30 electrically-controlled, too?

                    yes, it's electronically controlled, but ABS pulsing brake pressure and the mechanical 'lock-resistant brake system' reducing rear line pressure are two different things.

                    that's why i believe the e30 is already equipped with a similar system as the mechanical system you found.. it reduces rear line pressure to prevent the rear wheels from locking and causing a rotation.

                    and imo, any ABS is better than no ABS.

                      You need the right pump (IIRC the later one, but I would check that) and you need the system programmed for standalone use. Generally speaking, the cost of the latter is greater than the cost of the components (and the value of an E30).

                      I know it's been done on the E30 M3.

                            Having just returned from a track day with properly functioning stock ABS I can tell you its 100% adequate and quite enjoyable! It helped keep the back end in line several times and worked like a charm all day.
