    Removing front grilles at track?

    I'm thinking:

    +:
    cooling (radiator)
    more air to air-filter

    -:
more chance of debris/track rubber getting in engine bay

    aerodynamics? not concerned

    Any ideas?
    Racers?

on the BPG racecars we actually ran mesh attached behind the grills to stop road debris, and after a race, they would need to be cleaned out of tons of tire and road debris. i wouldnt just straight up run no grills. but i can see where you're going.

If anything, if you wanted more flow I'd dig up an extra set of US grilles and just dremel out all the plastic between the "fins." That way you get more airflow but still have protection from big chunks of rubber and track debris.

              Stu,

These have larger openings - they'd let more air in. Of course, they are ugly as sin.

There is no need to do that.
You will be just fine with stock grills. You can always take out the high beam and duct air to the MAF and alternator if you feel like it, and the harmonic damper if you are feeling frisky.
Most mod cars have the side grills blocked FYI.

Keep the grills on. The grills are designed to collect and move air through the radiator. If you want more cooling, you might be better off blocking sections of the grill off which don't lead to the radiator, which will speed up the air flowing through the radiator, removing more heat. (look at late GrpA M3s, they have plexiglass covering the grill and light assembly)

Think of the grills as a funnel...

or you can take them off and make the car look like a demo-derby junkyard special! :D

                      Stu,

you getting ready for a track weekend??

I remember you (I think) and Alex (for sure) years ago at Rockingham raising hell in the pits at BMWCCA driver's school when your dad was instructing.

                        Hey Bret,
Yes, I have fond memories of going to the track with him.
Unfortunately he stopped instructing when I was around 15
(after a nasty backwards-into-the-wall coming out of 11 at Rd. Atlanda in a students M3).
Raising hell in the pits? Not us. :D

Going back for the first time this season,
assuming my tires and driveshaft get here next week!!

BTW, thanks for the trunklid Bret.
