Choosing a tire for weekend/autocross duty

I know its been asked before but this is a bit more specific

215/45r16 BFG Rival or a 225/45r16 Dunlop ZII star spec

    mounted on a 16x7.5 et20 borbet type T

think the extra 10mm of width on the ZII will make the difference over the Rival? for dry use only.

I personally love 225/45 on the e30, but the Rivals are really great tires. That's a tough decision

I've used both. I am not the best driver out there. The Rivals seem to be more forgiving for me. Just my 2cents.

      M42 turbo build.

Do the rivals run true to width? or are they slightly wider than a street tire in the same 215 section width?

The Rival seems to be the better tire. On a 7.5" wheel I doubt you'll lose anything to the ZII.

I'm leaning towards the rival, there are a couple of local guys that have them and the only thing I've heard negative is their rain traction, but I have a set of wheels I drive on everyday so I'm not concerned about that in the least.

How long can I expect them to last?

I really like the rival. I run 225/45-15 as my street tire on my e30. I have not run them at a track, but I do autocross on them.

As for the ZIIs, a lot of people are fans of them. You are talking about the new compound in the star spec as well.

I think either tire would be a good choice. But, my preference at this time would be the rivals.

On the other hand, there are DOT R-comp tires that do well at both. like the BFG R1S. this is supposed to be a good Autox tire and good track duty tire. this would be better at autox than either of the street tires and better at the track than either. Just another option, if you are looking.

Not really interested in the full track tires right now, they are cost prohibitive and I will be using this extra set to get to and from the autox and probably when going driving with my friends on the weekends too. I don't want to hit a wet spot on a road and end up in a ditch because of it.

You need to come down to CLT to autox. There are quite a few people that come down from Asheville almost religiously because of the main site we use. Here's the info for this weekend's event, along with the course map. It looks pretty fast compared to normal, but should still be 70+ seconds.

And back on topic, I have some ZII's on my Apex Arc-8's and really like them. I have driven two different FRS's, one with Rivals and one with RS3's, and I REALLY liked the RS3's. The caveat is that it was ~50* when I ran the BFG's so getting heat into them was an issue, even with 2 drivers. Because of that the grip was probably down so it probably isn't a fair comparison. However, the RS3's stuck incredibly well and were very predictable, and also handled heat well. If they were available in the correct size I would consider them as well.

+1 for the RS3's. I run them on my car and have a buddy with a 924 turbo who has loved his as well.
