    rallycross?

This just popped on my local autox club site:
    *** October 15th - SCCA Spokes RallyCross - Austin ***

    Where: http://tinyurl.com/mn32p (cut-and-paste URL)

When: October 15th, regular autocross schedule (below)

What: The first ever SCCA/Spokes RallyCross in Austin! Spokes is teaming up with the Lone Star Region SCCA to bring new motorsports to Central Texas! RallyCrosses are very similar to autocross but instead of running on asphalt or concrete, we will be running on grass and dirt! That's right, time to bring out all of those Subarus to see what they're made of! More RallyCross info as well as car classifications can be found on the SCCA website (www.scca.com). Spokes will be adding a few classes of our own to up the fun factor including a "claimer" class that will limit expenses and make it possible to build your own RallyCross car before the event!
I was wondering if anybody had tried this in an e30 before? It sounds fun as hell, but my car is lowered ~1.8" so I'm not sure if my car can handle it. Anybody attended one and know how extreme these courses are? Can normal road-cars make it around without loosing too many pieces?

I wouldn't run an alloy sump car on one that has been lowered until you SEE the course. Courses vary widely in 'quality', and they also tend to get a lot worse as the day goes on. You can get some real deep ruts sometimes and will bottom pretty easily.

Rallycross is a blast. Your E30 should be OK, but you might want to fab up a skidplate for the oil pan if the ground is hard or has lots of rocks or roots.

In general, RWD is not as good as FWD in a rallycross, but it's still fun as hell, and RWD throws bigger roostertails than FWD.

Just go try it once, you'll be hooked.

Yeah I did it in my lowered rusty 325is before. Probably about same level of drop, had Eibach Pro springs on it so whatever that drops. One of the few things I found more fun then Autocross. Was also kinda fun to see a E30 with an aggressive driver can beat out all the Subies that show up. In the mud they go to one-wheel drive due to having all open diffs (at least most that showed up at the event I went to). I used a set of WS-50 snow tires and provided a lot of grip.

Really other then a lot of dust no major damage. Did have to fix the bumper a little (it was hitting on compression off of some ruts). And tore a tie-rod boot. Well worth it for the fun factor. Still searching around for a cheap car for a dedicated RallyX car.

It turns out non-caged cabbies can't run in rallycross, so I'm out of luck. Too bad, because it sounds like a ton of fun.
